Heavy snowfall across northern Japan has claimed at least 35 lives and left hundreds injured over the past two weeks, as accumulations reach up to two meters in the hardest-hit regions. The crisis has intensified as an Arctic air mass lingers over the Japanese archipelago, causing unusually severe winter conditions.

In Aomori prefecture, one of the worst-affected regions, more than 1,700 homes are without electricity, and most train services have been suspended, including the country’s high-speed bullet trains. The severe conditions have forced local authorities to implement emergency measures to maintain essential services.

“We anticipate some roads might get blocked off, and so we are consulting with services that can help with ambulances and fire trucks to get through to their destinations,” Aomori Governor Soichiro Miyashita said at a Wednesday press conference. He described how emergency personnel have been forced to park their vehicles and proceed on foot with stretchers to reach those in need of medical attention.

The governor has called on Aomori city officials to accelerate snow removal efforts on major thoroughfares, suggesting that the city’s response has lagged behind other municipalities. The severe weather has also prompted widespread school closures across the prefecture, affecting thousands of students.

Most casualties from the winter crisis have occurred when residents attempted to clear snow from their homes. Of the 35 reported deaths nationwide, 12 were in Niigata prefecture, a major rice-growing region. These include a man found collapsed on his roof in Uonuma city on January 21, and a 70-year-old resident of Nagaoka city who authorities believe fell from his roof while removing snow.

The government’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara has warned that the danger may not subside even as temperatures rise. “Although the weather is getting warmer, more danger could lie ahead because snow would start melting, resulting in landslides and slippery surfaces,” Kihara cautioned.

The Japan Meteorological Agency has recorded 393 injuries related to the heavy snowfall, including 126 serious cases. Niigata prefecture alone has reported 42 serious injuries. Property damage has also been significant, with 14 homes damaged across the affected areas—three in Niigata and eight in Aomori.

This severe winter weather pattern represents a significant disruption to daily life in northern Japan, where communities are typically well-prepared for seasonal snow. However, the extraordinary accumulation has overwhelmed local infrastructure and snow removal capabilities in several prefectures.

The economic impact extends beyond immediate infrastructure concerns. Northern Japan’s agricultural sector, particularly Niigata’s rice industry, may face long-term consequences from the extreme conditions. Transportation disruptions have affected supply chains across the region, with potential ripple effects for Japan’s economy.

Emergency response teams continue to prioritize reaching isolated communities, particularly elderly residents who are most vulnerable during such extreme weather events. Japan’s aging demographic profile, especially pronounced in rural northern regions, compounds the challenges facing first responders.

Weather forecasters predict another round of heavy snow for northern Japan this weekend, raising concerns that the crisis could intensify before conditions improve. Authorities have urged residents to exercise extreme caution, particularly when clearing snow, and to check on vulnerable neighbors.

The current snow emergency follows a pattern of increasingly severe and unpredictable weather events across Japan in recent years, which many climate experts attribute to changing global weather patterns and climate change impacts in the region.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely as emergency services work to restore power, clear transportation routes, and provide assistance to affected communities across northern Japan’s snow-covered landscape.
