Gunmen Kill 9, Wound 10 in South African Tavern Attack; Manhunt Launched

Nine people were killed and at least 10 others wounded when armed gunmen opened fire inside a South African pub early Sunday morning, triggering a massive manhunt in what marks the country’s second mass shooting in less than a month.

The attack occurred just before 1 a.m. at KwaNoxolo tavern in Bekkersdal, a township located approximately 28 miles west of Johannesburg. According to police reports, about 12 unidentified suspects arrived in a white mini-bus and a silver sedan before opening fire on patrons inside the establishment.

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as the gunmen continued shooting randomly while fleeing the area. “Some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen,” police stated in their official report.

Maj. Gen. Fred Kekana, Gauteng’s acting provincial commissioner, told reporters that the assailants, some wearing balaclavas to conceal their identities, were heavily armed with an AK-47 rifle and multiple 9mm pistols. The combination of high-powered weapons and the indiscriminate nature of the attack led to the high casualty count.

Gauteng province authorities have launched a coordinated manhunt for the suspects, with the Serious and Violent Crime Investigations unit leading the operation in conjunction with the Crime Detection Tracing Unit. Investigators have been collecting evidence at the scene, interviewing survivors, and reviewing any available security footage from the area.

This latest incident follows a disturbing pattern of mass shootings at bars and taverns across South Africa. Earlier this month, gunmen attacked an unlicensed bar near the capital Pretoria, killing at least 12 people and injuring 13 others. The proximity of these attacks has raised concerns about a potential increase in organized violence targeting public gathering places.
