Several Gulf states have reported intercepting a massive wave of Iranian missiles and drones over the past 24 hours, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions following U.S. and Israeli strikes against Tehran.

Bahrain’s National Communication Center announced that its air defenses successfully intercepted 70 missiles and 59 drones targeting the kingdom. In Qatar, authorities reported downing two Iranian Su-24 fighter aircraft and intercepting seven ballistic missiles and five drones.

The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defense disclosed an even larger barrage, reporting the interception of nine ballistic missiles, six cruise missiles, and 148 drones. Since the beginning of Iran’s retaliatory campaign, UAE officials stated they have detected 174 ballistic missiles launched toward their territory, destroying 161 while 13 fell into the sea. Additionally, they identified 689 Iranian drones, intercepting 645 while 44 fell within UAE territory.

The scale of these defensive operations underscores the severity of the current regional crisis. In response to the attacks, the UAE has closed its embassy in Tehran and withdrawn its diplomatic staff, signaling a serious diplomatic rupture between the two nations.

Kuwait has also been targeted, with its air defenses reportedly intercepting and destroying 97 ballistic missiles and 283 drones since the attacks began, according to the state-run Kuwait News Agency.

Saudi Arabia, another key regional power, reported that two drones were intercepted near the strategically important Ras Tanura oil refinery. The Saudi Press Agency noted that debris from the interceptions caused minor damage to the facility, which is crucial to global oil markets.

The attacks represent a significant threat to regional stability and global energy supplies. The Gulf states collectively account for a substantial portion of the world’s oil production and exports, with facilities like Ras Tanura being vital links in the global energy supply chain. Any serious disruption to these facilities could have immediate implications for global energy prices and supply security.

In a show of regional solidarity against the Iranian attacks, the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, and the United States released a joint statement condemning what they described as “indiscriminate and reckless” missile and drone strikes across the region. The statement emphasized that these attacks endangered civilians, damaged infrastructure, and violated the sovereignty of multiple states.

“The targeting of civilians and of countries not engaged in hostilities is reckless and destabilizing behavior,” the statement read in part. “We stand united in defense of our citizens, sovereignty, and territory, and reaffirm our right to self-defense in the face of these attacks. We remain committed to regional security and commend the effective air and missile defense cooperation that has prevented far greater loss of life and destruction.”

Jordan, which sits at a strategic crossroads in the region, reported intercepting 49 Iranian projectiles on Saturday, including 13 ballistic missiles, according to Jordanian news outlet Roya News.

The current escalation comes after a series of strikes and counter-strikes between Iran and a U.S.-Israeli coalition. Military analysts note that the scope of Iran’s attack—using a combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, drones, and fighter aircraft—represents one of the most extensive coordinated aerial assaults in the region’s recent history.

The successful interception of the majority of these weapons demonstrates the effectiveness of the integrated air defense systems that have been developed across the Gulf states, often with American technical support and equipment. However, the sheer volume of the attacks suggests Iran’s growing capability to overwhelm these defenses through mass deployments of relatively low-cost weapons platforms.

As tensions continue to rise, international diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation have so far shown limited success, raising concerns about further military actions and the potential for a wider regional conflict with global implications.
