Climate activist Greta Thunberg was arrested in central London on Tuesday while supporting pro-Palestinian activists who are conducting a hunger strike to protest their imprisonment. The 22-year-old Swedish activist was holding a sign in support of the hunger strikers and Palestine Action, an organization that was designated as a terrorist group by the British government earlier this year.

The incident occurred during a larger demonstration where two other activists sprayed red paint in front of Aspen Insurance in the City of London, the capital’s financial district. According to the protest group Prisoners for Palestine, they targeted this insurance company because of its business ties with Elbit Systems, an Israel-linked defense firm.

City of London police confirmed that a man and a woman were arrested on suspicion of criminal damage in connection with the paint-spraying incident. A third woman, presumably Thunberg, was later arrested on suspicion of supporting a banned organization. In keeping with standard procedure, British police have not officially identified any of the suspects by name before formal charges are filed.

The protest was organized in solidarity with eight Palestine Action members who have been staging a hunger strike while being held without bail awaiting trial on various charges related to previous demonstrations. The situation has become increasingly dire for some of the protesters, with Prisoners for Palestine stating that the first two individuals to join the hunger strike have now gone without food for 52 days and are at a “critical stage, where death is a real possibility.”

Despite growing concerns about the health of the hunger strikers, the British government has maintained that it will not intervene in the judicial process, insisting that decisions about bail and detention remain within the purview of the courts.

This arrest marks the latest in a series of legal encounters for Thunberg, whose activism has expanded beyond climate issues to encompass other social justice causes. Earlier this year, in February 2024, she was acquitted by a London court after being charged with refusing to comply with a police order to leave a protest that was blocking the entrance to a major oil and gas industry conference.

Thunberg has previously faced legal consequences for her activism, having been fined multiple times in both Sweden and the United Kingdom for civil disobedience related to various protests. Since rising to prominence as a teenage climate activist, she has broadened the scope of her advocacy to include a range of international human rights issues.

The designation of Palestine Action as a terrorist organization by the UK government has been controversial, with critics arguing it limits legitimate protest while supporters maintain it’s necessary for public safety. The ongoing hunger strike and associated protests highlight the escalating tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its global reverberations.

As the situation develops, attention remains focused on both the fate of the hunger strikers and the legal proceedings facing Thunberg and other demonstrators arrested during Tuesday’s protest.
