Fire breaks out at Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Park

Fire erupted Wednesday morning at Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Park velodrome, requiring a massive emergency response as authorities worked to contain the blaze that primarily affected the facility’s fabric roof.

The incident mobilized approximately 80 firefighters and 20 vehicles, according to Rio state’s military fire department. Officials confirmed the fire was successfully brought under control, with no reported injuries. The interior of the building, including most of the Olympic Museum housed inside, was largely spared from damage.

Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere addressed the situation during a press briefing, noting that only a small portion of the city’s Olympic Museum, which houses about 1,000 items celebrating the 2016 Summer Games, sustained minimal damage.

“The structure of the velodrome itself is preserved and the track has not been hit at all,” Cavaliere reassured reporters, indicating that repairs needed would be relatively minor.

This marks the third significant fire incident at the velodrome since the 2016 Olympics. Two previous blazes occurred in 2017, both attributed to paper sky lanterns that descended onto the venue’s roof. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of Wednesday’s fire, though they haven’t yet released preliminary findings.
