A father in Iceland claims his concerns about his son’s gender transition led to him losing parental rights in a case that has drawn international attention, including from tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Alexandre Rocha, a French national who has lived in Iceland for 25 years, lost custody of his 11-year-old autistic son to the child’s mother in December. Rocha believes the court ruled against him because he questioned the potential long-term impacts of puberty blockers and hormone therapies for his child.

“It should be a crime,” Rocha told reporters regarding the medical interventions. “You are molesting kids, castrating a boy, like in the case of my kid. This shouldn’t happen. This is an ideology that has no place for kids.”

Rocha argues that his son, who was 10 years old when the gender identity issues began and whose interests center around video games like Minecraft and Roblox, cannot comprehend the permanent consequences of sex reassignment. The father expressed particular concern about his son’s autism diagnosis, which came just eight months prior to the custody decision.

According to Rocha, the court and medical professionals “slightly passed over” the autism diagnosis during trial proceedings. He explained that children on the autism spectrum often struggle with feeling comfortable in their own skin and may express desires to be something else entirely—noting that his son sometimes prefers to identify as a cat, wearing a tail or cat ears.

When Rocha raised these concerns in court, he says an Icelandic endocrinologist “totally dismissed” him under oath, assuring that hormone treatments posed “no problem” and refusing to consider potential underlying mental health factors that might influence the child’s gender identity.

Now excluded from medical decision-making for his son, Rocha fears what treatments may be administered without his knowledge. “It could very well be that he is being treated with hormones and I don’t know anything about it,” he said.

He added that the child’s mother has intensified what he describes as a progressive gender ideology, introducing terminology he was unfamiliar with—such as “deadname,” which refers to a person’s birth name before transitioning. Rocha claims he had to use ChatGPT to understand such terms.

In February, Rocha was notified that the child’s mother had formally changed his son’s name to a female name, meaning official identification documents would now list the child as a girl.

The case has drawn substantial international attention. Tesla CEO and X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk commented on Rocha’s situation after it was shared by a popular social media account, saying: “The woke mind virus even affects Iceland.” Musk has previously spoken about his own experiences with his child Vivian Jenna Wilson, who transitioned from male to female. Musk has claimed he was “essentially tricked” into giving consent for puberty blockers before he fully understood the situation.

Rocha expressed appreciation for Musk’s attention to his case. “I think we have a common fight going on,” he said. “Because at the end of the day, we’re all parents, no matter the borders or nationalities.”

Beyond the political and ideological dimensions of the case, Rocha emphasized the personal toll of separation from his child. He says he hasn’t seen his son since January and misses everyday moments like bedtime stories, cooking together, and watching classic 1990s films like “Jurassic Park.”

Rocha has recently requested daily fines against the child’s mother for allegedly obstructing his court-ordered visitation rights. Court documents show the mother has denied intentionally blocking visits, claiming instead that the child refuses to attend because Rocha rejects his transgender identity and will not use his new name.

“When you don’t know what’s happening on the other side, as a parent, you get really worried,” Rocha said. “We are slowly drifting apart, and that’s a very sad outcome of this.”

Despite pressure to remain silent about his situation, Rocha encourages other parents to trust their instincts and speak up when concerned about their children’s welfare. “I’m here for my kid and for his future,” he stated. “That’s the only thing I care about. I am campaigning for him, for his future.”

This case highlights the difficulty in navigating complex issues around gender identity, especially when a child has additional needs like autism. I appreciate Elon Musk drawing attention to it, but the courts must make impartial decisions based on evidence, not ideology.

Autistic children often struggle with major life changes and long-term consequences. The father’s concerns about the potential impacts of gender transition seem valid, but the courts must weigh all factors to reach the fairest outcome for the child.
