Iranian Official’s Daughter Dismissed from Emory University Teaching Position Amid Protests

The daughter of a senior Iranian official who criticized potential U.S. intervention in Iran’s protests has been removed from her teaching position at Emory University, according to recent reports.

Fatemeh Ardeshir-Larijani, who served as an assistant professor in the department of hematology and medical oncology at Emory’s School of Medicine, is no longer employed by the university, as announced in a January 24 email from the medical school’s dean. The university’s student newspaper, The Emory Wheel, first reported the dismissal.

The announcement followed a January 19 demonstration where Iranian-American protesters gathered outside Emory’s Winship Cancer Institute to oppose Ardeshir-Larijani’s employment at the institution. Following her dismissal, Ardeshir-Larijani’s faculty page and Emory Healthcare profiles were removed from the university’s websites.

Ardeshir-Larijani is the daughter of Ali Larijani, a high-ranking Iranian official and former parliamentary speaker who has been vocal in his criticism of the United States. The dismissal comes during a period of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, triggered by widespread protests in Iran and the subsequent government crackdown that began on December 28.

President Donald Trump had previously warned Iran of potential U.S. intervention if the regime continued its violent suppression of protesters. In a January 2 Truth Social post, Trump stated that if Iran “violently kills peaceful protesters,” the U.S. would “come to their rescue,” adding that American forces were “locked and loaded and ready to go.”

These comments drew sharp rebuke from Iranian officials, including Ali Larijani, who posted on social media platform X that U.S. interference in Iran’s internal affairs would “destabilize the entire region” and “destroy American interests.” Larijani further warned, “The American people must know that Trump is the one who started this adventure, and they should pay attention to the safety of their soldiers.”

The nonprofit Alliance Against Islamic Regime of Iran Apologists (AAIRIA) had previously claimed that Ardeshir-Larijani had been living and working in the United States for several years. Following her father’s comments, the organization urged U.S. authorities to review her immigration status and that of her husband.

In a statement, AAIRIA called on officials to determine whether their continued residence in the United States aligned with “U.S. law, national security considerations and principles of accountability and human rights.”

The controversy gained additional momentum when Rep. Buddy Carter, R-Ga., called on Emory to dismiss Ardeshir-Larijani and asked Georgia’s medical board to revoke her medical license.

Her dismissal came approximately two weeks after the U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on her father. According to the Treasury, Ali Larijani “is responsible for coordinating the response to the protests on behalf of the Supreme Leader of Iran and has publicly called for Iranian security forces to use force to repress peaceful protesters.”

This case highlights what critics have described as a glaring double standard among Iranian officials who publicly condemn the West while their family members enjoy the benefits of living, studying, or working in Western countries. A 2018 Washington Times report documented numerous instances of relatives of senior Iranian regime figures residing in the United States and Europe despite the anti-Western rhetoric of the Islamic Republic’s leadership.

Neither the White House, the Department of Homeland Security, nor Emory University have provided additional comments on the matter when contacted by reporters.

As tensions between the U.S. and Iran remain high, this dismissal underscores the complex intersection of academic freedom, international relations, and the personal connections between political adversaries on the world stage.
