Hundreds Gather in Jerusalem to Honor Charlie Kirk’s Legacy, Vow to Continue His Work

Approximately 300 people assembled in Jerusalem on Sunday to commemorate the life of Charlie Kirk, the Turning Point USA founder who was killed during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University in September. The memorial, attended by Israeli officials, clergy members, and American visitors, transformed from a somber remembrance into a declaration of purpose.

Pastor Rob McCoy, one of Kirk’s closest confidants, offered personal insights into the conservative activist’s character during the event, as reported by the Press Service of Israel (TPS-IL).

“He was faithful, humble, a wonderful husband and father,” McCoy said, revealing Kirk’s practice of observing a weekly Sabbath rest. “He found unbelievable freedom in turning everything off. From Friday night to Saturday night, no one could reach him. That rhythm grounded him.”

McCoy emphasized that Kirk viewed politics not as a path to power, but as a means to strengthen society. “He saw politics as an on-ramp to increased humanity,” McCoy explained. “If he could get young people rowing in the streams of liberty, he believed they would eventually reach its source.”

The memorial highlighted Kirk’s impact on both individuals and the broader conservative movement. Tammy Martin, who traveled from California for the event, shared how deeply Kirk’s death affected her despite never having met him personally.

“When he was killed, it felt like losing someone I knew,” Martin said. She credited Kirk with helping Christians understand the importance of supporting Israel. “Some people you only see through a screen, but the truth they speak goes straight through. Charlie was one of those people.”

Fellow Californian Robert Whitley praised Kirk’s unique ability to connect with younger audiences. “He knew how to speak to young people in a way no one else could,” Whitley said. “He helped them push back against indoctrination and see Israel and America with real clarity.”

Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, Amichai Chikli, lauded Kirk’s principled approach to his work. “Charlie embodied the deeper meaning of freedom — responsibility, clarity, discipline,” Chikli said. “His death is a tremendous loss, not only to his family but to the conservative movement worldwide and to all those who saw him as a defender of truth.”

American-born musician Nissim Black described Kirk as “a giant — a real giant — and his legacy is a legacy you can’t shake.” Black emphasized Kirk’s moral conviction, noting, “He was unapologetic when it came to morality and unapologetic when it came to standing for what was right. Even in his absence, you feel it — he held so many people together.”

Throughout the evening, speakers repeatedly referenced one of Kirk’s final recorded statements: “In the absence of courage, truth is an orphan.” This phrase seemed to encapsulate the mission that attendees felt called to continue in Kirk’s absence.

Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012, building it into one of the most influential conservative youth organizations in the United States. Under his leadership, the organization expanded to hundreds of high school and college campuses, focusing on promoting conservative principles among young Americans. His strong stance on supporting Israel resonated particularly with the Jerusalem memorial attendees.

The assassination of Kirk sent shockwaves through conservative circles and renewed debates about political violence in America. His death at age 31 cut short a career that had already made significant impacts on conservative politics and youth engagement.

As the Jerusalem memorial concluded, attendees expressed a collective determination to advance the causes Kirk championed. The gathering appeared to solidify a commitment among those present to ensure his advocacy work continues despite his absence.

“Charlie is gone, but the truth he fought for is not,” remarked one attendee as the evening came to a close. “And it’s up to us now.”
