Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva revoked the visa of a U.S. diplomat Friday, escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations after the official attempted to visit former president Jair Bolsonaro in prison.

The move comes after U.S. State Department official Darren Beattie was denied permission to visit Bolsonaro, who is currently serving a 27-year sentence for allegedly leading a coup attempt in 2023. Lula framed the decision as a reciprocal measure in response to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s revocation of visas for Brazilian officials last August over alleged connections to a Cuban medical program.

“That American fellow who said he had come here to visit Jair Bolsonaro was forbidden to do so,” Lula said, adding that Beattie would remain barred from entering Brazil until the visas for Brazil’s health minister and his family are reinstated.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who handed down Bolsonaro’s sentence, rejected Beattie’s request to visit the Brasilia prison facility. According to court documents, Beattie had initially requested a visa to attend the Brazil-US Critical Minerals Forum in São Paulo, but his subsequent attempt to visit the imprisoned former president raised concerns within Brazil’s government.

The Foreign Ministry characterized Beattie’s planned prison visit as “undue interference” in Brazil’s domestic politics, particularly sensitive given the country’s upcoming election cycle. A Brazilian government official, speaking anonymously due to lack of authorization, told The Associated Press that Beattie’s visa was revoked because of “the omission of information and lies about the purpose of the visit upon his visa request.”

Beattie, a conservative author who previously served as an under secretary for public diplomacy during the Trump administration, has been a vocal critic of both Lula and Justice de Moraes. The judge had initially approved Beattie’s request to visit Bolsonaro on Tuesday but reversed his decision after receiving new information from the Foreign Ministry.

The diplomatic spat underscores the complex relationship between Brazil and the United States during an election year for both nations. Lula, 80, is seeking reelection later this year, with Senator Flávio Bolsonaro—son of the imprisoned former president—expected to be his main challenger in Lula’s bid for a fourth presidential term.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has consistently supported Bolsonaro, describing the case against him as politically motivated. Trump had previously imposed tariffs on Brazil, citing what he called unfair treatment of the former president, though these sanctions were partially relaxed in November as part of broader efforts to reduce consumer costs for Americans.

Despite these tensions, Lula has repeatedly expressed interest in meeting with Trump in Washington to discuss various bilateral issues including tariffs and security cooperation, though no date has been confirmed for such a meeting.

Neither the White House nor the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia has issued any official statement regarding Lula’s decision to revoke Beattie’s visa or the Brazilian Supreme Court’s ruling.

The visa revocation represents the latest development in Brazil’s complex political landscape, where institutional tensions remain high following Bolsonaro’s tumultuous presidency and subsequent legal troubles. Justice de Moraes, who has become a polarizing figure in Brazilian politics, continues to play a central role in cases involving the former president and his allies.

Brazil’s political stability remains a key concern for international observers and investors, particularly as the country prepares for another potentially divisive election season. The diplomatic incident with Beattie highlights how Brazil’s domestic politics increasingly impact its foreign relations, especially with key partners like the United States.
