A preliminary autopsy indicates University of Alabama student James “Jimmy” Gracey, who disappeared during spring break in Barcelona, likely died from an accidental drowning, according to local police reports filed with a judge.

The body of the 20-year-old Elmhurst, Illinois native was recovered Friday from the Mediterranean Sea, days after he went missing in the early hours of Tuesday. Catalan authorities conducted an extensive search operation after his disappearance from the city’s Port Olímpic district, a popular nightlife area along the waterfront promenade.

Security camera footage shows Gracey walking alone onto a dock near the Shoko nightclub before falling into the water, according to Spanish newspaper El Periódico. The preliminary autopsy findings reveal multiple injuries to the body consistent with impact against breakwater rocks, possibly during sea swells.

“The preliminary autopsy report points to drowning as the cause of death,” a police spokesperson confirmed to reporters. Final autopsy results are expected to be released on Thursday.

Police recovered Gracey’s wallet floating in the water on Thursday, a day before finding his body. Investigators noted the wallet remained intact with money, credit cards, and personal documents still present, diminishing suspicions of robbery or foul play.

During the investigation, authorities discovered Gracey’s phone in the possession of an individual known to police for previous offenses. However, this person was determined not to have had direct contact with Gracey and was subsequently charged only with “illegal possession of another person’s belonging.”

The incident occurred while Gracey was visiting friends studying abroad in Barcelona during his university’s spring break. He had been socializing with friends at Shoko, a world-famous nightclub in the Port Olímpic area, before becoming separated from the group.

The case has raised safety concerns about the popular tourist district. A Hungarian tourist reported being robbed of her gold necklace in the same vicinity the night before Gracey disappeared. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether Gracey’s gold chain with a rhinestone cross was found with his body.

Port Olímpic, developed for the 1992 Olympic Games, has become one of Barcelona’s premier nightlife destinations, attracting thousands of international tourists annually. The area features numerous clubs and restaurants along the waterfront but has occasionally been associated with petty crime targeting visitors.

Barcelona’s nightclub districts have seen several accidents involving international tourists in recent years, particularly during spring and summer months when tourism peaks. Local authorities have periodically increased police presence in these areas to address safety concerns.

The Mossos d’Esquadra, Catalonia’s police force, maintains that the primary line of investigation points to accidental death. “The preliminary autopsy report did not indicate Jimmy suffered injuries prior to drowning,” the police spokesperson emphasized.

The University of Alabama community has been shaken by the tragedy. Gracey, described by friends as an outgoing and well-liked student, was in his sophomore year. University officials have expressed condolences to the family and offered support resources to students affected by the loss.

The U.S. Consulate in Barcelona has been assisting the Gracey family throughout the ordeal. International student safety advocates note that incidents involving American students abroad, while relatively rare, often highlight the importance of travel awareness and buddy systems in unfamiliar locations.

Authorities continue their investigation as they await the final autopsy report to confirm the preliminary findings.
