In a dramatic display of courage during the Sydney Hanukkah shooting, a bystander tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen, potentially saving numerous lives in what Australian authorities have confirmed as a targeted attack against the Jewish community.

Footage captured the moment 43-year-old Ahmed al-Ahmad approached the shooter from behind as he was firing on victims at Bondi Beach. Al-Ahmad tackled the gunman and successfully wrested the weapon away before turning it on the assailant without firing. During the confrontation, al-Ahmad sustained gunshot wounds to his arm and shoulder when the second attacker opened fire on him.

“He’s a hero. One hundred percent a hero,” Mustafa al-Ahmad told Australia’s News 7 about his cousin. Australian media reports indicate Ahmed is currently undergoing surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.

The attack, which occurred during celebrations for the first day of Hanukkah at Sydney’s iconic Bondi Beach, claimed at least 11 lives and left 28 people hospitalized. One gunman was killed during the incident, while the second remains in critical condition. Authorities have not yet released the identities of either attacker.

As footage of al-Ahmad’s brave intervention spread across social media, officials from Australia and abroad offered praise for his actions. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who initially believed the rescuer was Jewish, acknowledged al-Ahmad’s heroism in a statement.

“We saw an action of a brave man—turns out a Muslim brave man, and I salute him—that stopped one of these terrorists from killing innocent Jews,” Netanyahu said.

Chris Minns, Premier of New South Wales state, echoed these sentiments: “That man is a genuine hero, and I’ve got no doubt that there are many, many people alive tonight as a result of his bravery.”

The attack represents one of the deadliest mass shootings in Australia’s recent history. The country, which implemented strict gun control measures following the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, has experienced relatively few mass shooting incidents in the decades since those reforms.

Sunday’s violence comes amid heightened global tensions and increased concerns about antisemitic incidents worldwide. Jewish communities across several countries have reported a rise in threats and attacks, particularly since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023.

Security experts note that the timing of the attack on Hanukkah, one of Judaism’s most important holidays, suggests careful planning and deliberate targeting of the Jewish community. Australian authorities have increased security at Jewish institutions nationwide in response.

The shooting has prompted a nationwide outpouring of grief and solidarity with Australia’s Jewish community. Vigils are being organized in major cities, and political leaders across the spectrum have condemned the violence.

Al-Ahmad’s actions have been widely praised as exemplifying courage in the face of terror and highlighting how individual intervention can make a critical difference during mass casualty events. His decision to tackle the gunman, despite significant personal risk, potentially prevented an even higher death toll.

Emergency response teams arrived quickly at the scene, treating victims and securing the area. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as beachgoers and Hanukkah celebrants sought shelter during the attack.

Australian investigators are now working to determine the shooters’ backgrounds, potential affiliations, and how they obtained the weapons used in the attack. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to understand all aspects of the tragedy that has shocked the nation.
