French authorities have arrested an Arizona fugitive sex offender who had been living abroad for years while evading his probation terms, officials confirmed this week.

Michael Robert Wiseman, 51, was taken into custody on November 1 in Kilstett, northeastern France, where he now faces new charges of sexually assaulting a child. The arrest ends his years-long flight from U.S. justice that took him through multiple countries.

Scottsdale Police Sergeant Dustin Patrick told Phoenix’s 12News that Wiseman’s capture came after an unexpected slip-up. While applying for a pilot’s license in Spain, Wiseman used his real name, prompting his potential employer to conduct a routine internet search.

“His potential employer Googled his name and found that he was on Scottsdale’s most wanted list and called Spanish authorities,” Patrick explained.

Investigators discovered Wiseman had constructed an elaborate life abroad. After fleeing the United States, he had traveled to Vietnam where he reportedly adopted two children, then moved to Poland where he obtained a legitimate passport under an alias, before finally settling in France.

This marks the second time Wiseman has fled U.S. soil while facing legal consequences for sex crimes. His original case dates back to 2008, when Arizona authorities charged him after finding child sexual abuse material on his computer.

While those initial charges were pending, Wiseman removed his court-ordered ankle monitoring device in late 2008 and fled the country. Spanish authorities arrested him in 2009 and extradited him back to Arizona, where he eventually pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted sexual exploitation of a child plus one escape charge.

Court records reveal that during an interview with a probation officer, Wiseman attributed his first escape attempt to mounting personal difficulties. He cited his wife leaving him following his 2008 arrest and subsequent financial problems as factors that drove him to flee.

After spending more than two years in jail following his return from Spain, Wiseman received his sentence in 2012: lifetime probation and a one-year deferred jail sentence. Court records indicate the additional incarceration was later deleted by a judge in at least one of his two Arizona cases.

Shortly after sentencing, authorities say Wiseman violated his probation terms and fled the United States for a second time, beginning the international journey that would eventually lead him to France.

Law enforcement officials indicate that Wiseman’s case illustrates the challenges of monitoring sex offenders who are determined to evade supervision. The international manhunt required coordination between American, Spanish, and French authorities, highlighting the complex nature of tracking fugitives across borders.

Scottsdale police confirmed that Wiseman will face extradition back to the United States after French authorities complete their prosecution of the new sexual assault charges against him. Arizona prosecutors have not provided a timeline for when this extradition might occur, acknowledging the legal complexities of international cases.

The legal consequences Wiseman now faces in the U.S. could be severe. Violating lifetime probation terms for sex offenses typically results in significant prison time, separate from any potential conviction in the new French case.

Attempts to reach Wiseman’s former legal representation were unsuccessful. His previous public defender no longer works in that capacity, and efforts to locate the attorney through bar directories and internet searches did not yield current contact information.

This case underscores ongoing challenges in international law enforcement coordination and the monitoring of convicted sex offenders, particularly those with resources to travel between countries and establish new identities.
