A deadly airstrike on a hospital in Sudan’s western Darfur region has claimed at least 64 lives, including 13 children, according to the World Health Organization. The attack, which occurred last Friday at the Al Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur, also left at least 89 people injured and rendered the medical facility inoperable.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus confirmed the casualties in a statement posted on social media platform X, where he called for an end to the violence that has plagued Sudan for more than a year.

“Enough blood has been spilled. Enough suffering has been inflicted. The time has come to de-escalate the conflict in Sudan,” Ghebreyesus stated.

The attack represents one of the deadliest single incidents in Sudan’s ongoing civil war, which erupted in April 2023 when tensions between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) escalated into full-scale combat. The conflict stemmed from a power struggle between the two military factions that had previously worked together to overthrow civilian leadership.

Responsibility for the hospital strike remains contested. The RSF has placed blame on the military, while army officials have denied involvement. Speaking on condition of anonymity, two military officials claimed the intended target was a nearby police station, not the hospital itself.

This latest atrocity highlights the devastating toll the conflict has taken on Sudan’s healthcare system. According to WHO data, more than 2,000 people have been killed in attacks on medical facilities since the fighting began. The targeting of hospitals and healthcare workers has exacerbated an already dire humanitarian situation, with medical services severely compromised across much of the country.

The conflict has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. Official UN figures estimate at least 40,000 deaths since the war began, though humanitarian organizations suggest the actual death toll could be significantly higher. Access limitations and disrupted reporting systems have made accurate casualty counts difficult to establish.

The Darfur region, where the hospital attack occurred, has a particularly troubled history. The area was the site of a brutal conflict in the early 2000s that resulted in approximately 300,000 deaths and displaced millions. International observers have raised concerns that the current conflict could trigger another genocide in the region.

The war has displaced nearly 10 million people, according to the United Nations, creating the world’s largest internal displacement crisis. Approximately 2.5 million people have fled to neighboring countries, while those remaining face severe food insecurity, with parts of the country at risk of famine.

International peace efforts have made little progress despite multiple attempted ceasefires and peace talks hosted by Saudi Arabia and the United States. The conflict continues to spread across the country, with fighting particularly intense in the capital Khartoum, Darfur, and other strategic regions.

Humanitarian organizations have repeatedly called for protected access to deliver essential aid. The destruction of critical infrastructure, including hospitals, has severely hampered relief efforts and left millions without access to basic healthcare, clean water, and adequate nutrition.

As Sudan approaches 18 months of conflict, international pressure for a resolution continues to mount, but a clear path to peace remains elusive. The attack on Al Daein Teaching Hospital serves as a stark reminder of the war’s devastating human cost and the urgent need for a sustainable political solution.
