Seven Indian pilgrims were killed and nine others injured when their bus veered off a mountain road in central Nepal on Saturday night, according to local police.
The accident occurred near Shahid Lakhan village, approximately 120 kilometers west of Kathmandu, as the group was returning from the Manakamana Temple, a revered Hindu shrine. The bus was traveling downhill when it failed to navigate a curve, plunging approximately 150 meters down the mountainside before coming to rest in a ravine.
Among the injured were seven Indian pilgrims and two Nepali nationals—the bus driver and his assistant. Emergency responders, including local police and villagers, worked together to rescue survivors from the wreckage and transport them to nearby hospitals for treatment.
“The injured pilgrims are receiving medical care at local facilities,” a police spokesperson said. “Autopsies will be performed on the deceased before their bodies are released to family members.”
The Manakamana Temple, where the group had visited prior to the accident, holds significant religious importance for Hindus across the region. Devotees believe the goddess enshrined there fulfills wishes of those who make the pilgrimage. The temple is a popular destination for Indian tourists, who make up a substantial portion of Nepal’s religious tourism sector.
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing safety concerns on Nepal’s mountain roads. The Himalayan nation’s challenging topography—characterized by steep terrain and narrow passages—presents significant risks for vehicles, particularly buses carrying multiple passengers. Many routes connecting religious sites wind through remote mountain areas with limited safety infrastructure.
Transportation safety experts have long pointed to a combination of factors contributing to Nepal’s high rate of road accidents, including poorly maintained vehicles, inadequate road infrastructure, and challenging weather conditions. During certain seasons, roads can become particularly treacherous due to monsoon rains or winter conditions.
“Bus accidents in Nepal are unfortunately common,” noted a regional transportation safety analyst. “The combination of winding mountain roads, older vehicles, and sometimes overloading creates dangerous conditions, particularly in remote areas where emergency response can be delayed.”
The crash comes during peak pilgrimage season, when thousands of devotees from India and across South Asia visit Nepal’s numerous religious sites. The tourism ministry has previously implemented safety campaigns targeting transportation providers serving pilgrim routes, though enforcement remains challenging in remote areas.
Indo-Nepali relations have a strong cultural and religious component, with open borders allowing citizens to travel freely between the countries. Religious tourism forms an important economic link, with Indian pilgrims visiting numerous sacred sites throughout Nepal annually.
Local authorities have indicated they will investigate the specific causes of this accident, including the mechanical condition of the bus and potential contributing factors such as road conditions or driver fatigue.
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu is reportedly coordinating with Nepali authorities to assist the injured pilgrims and facilitate arrangements for the deceased. Such cooperation is standard protocol following accidents involving foreign nationals in Nepal.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the inherent risks associated with mountain travel in the region and may prompt renewed calls for enhanced safety measures on routes frequented by pilgrims and tourists in Nepal’s mountainous regions.
