Four people died on Saturday as Russia and Ukraine exchanged attacks, casting a shadow over upcoming peace talks aimed at resolving the long-running conflict that has devastated the region.

In the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, a Russian drone strike hit a residential house, killing a man and a woman and injuring six others, including two children, according to regional governor Ivan Fedorov. The attack came as Russian strikes also knocked out electrical power across much of Ukraine’s northern Chernihiv region, further straining civilian infrastructure already weakened by years of conflict.

Across the border, Ukrainian shelling of Russia’s Belgorod region killed two women and wounded another, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. The Belgorod region, which shares a border with Ukraine, has frequently been targeted in Ukrainian counterattacks throughout the conflict.

The latest violence comes at a critical moment as U.S.-Ukraine talks get underway in Miami. U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff described the meetings as “constructive” on social media, noting they were “part of ongoing mediation efforts, with discussions focused on narrowing and resolving remaining items to move closer to a comprehensive peace agreement.”

The Miami talks, which included the participation of former U.S. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, represent Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s attempt to revitalize stalled peace negotiations. Zelenskyy stated late Thursday that he had dispatched a delegation to the United States specifically to push for the resumption of trilateral talks that have been suspended while international attention focused on the conflict in the Middle East.

The Ukrainian president emphasized two primary objectives for the meeting: ensuring that the trilateral negotiations resume and securing Washington’s continued authorization for other NATO countries to purchase American weapons for Ukraine. The latter has become an increasingly urgent priority as Ukraine faces ammunition shortages and manpower constraints after more than two years of full-scale war.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged on Friday that a new round of U.S.-mediated negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv would likely occur soon. However, Western European officials have repeatedly accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of deliberately stalling in negotiations while attempting to advance his military’s position and capture additional Ukrainian territory.

Russian forces currently occupy nearly 20 percent of Ukraine’s territory, including the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014, and large portions of the eastern Donbas region.

The conflict in Ukraine has recently received less global attention as the international community’s focus shifted toward the escalating situation in the Middle East, which intensified on February 28 with Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran. This shift in attention comes at a particularly challenging time for Ukraine, which is facing severe financial constraints.

Meanwhile, Russia has benefited from a temporary U.S. waiver on oil sanctions, resulting in a significant financial windfall that helps sustain its war effort. In contrast, Ukraine continues to wait for a promised 90-billion-euro ($103 billion) loan package from the European Union.

The economic disparity between the warring nations threatens to further tip the balance of the conflict, potentially undermining Ukraine’s negotiating position despite ongoing Western diplomatic support.

As peace talks proceed, civilians on both sides of the border continue to bear the brunt of a conflict that has killed thousands, displaced millions, and caused widespread destruction throughout eastern and southern Ukraine since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022.
