A 12-year-old Australian boy has died following a brutal shark attack in Sydney Harbor, his family confirmed Saturday. Nico Antic had been fighting for his life since January 18, when he was attacked while swimming at a popular cliff-jumping spot known as Jump Rock near Shark Beach in the eastern Sydney suburb of Vaucluse.

“We are heartbroken to share that our son, Nico, has passed away,” Nico’s parents, Lorena and Juan, said in a statement. “Nico was a happy, friendly, and sporty young boy with the most kind and generous spirit. He was always full of life and that’s how we’ll remember him.”

The family expressed gratitude to first responders and medical staff at Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick for their efforts, as well as to community members for their overwhelming support. A GoFundMe campaign launched by a family friend has raised more than $266,000 as of Saturday evening.

According to police reports, the attack occurred around 4:20 p.m. on January 18 after Antic jumped from a 20-foot ledge into the water. He suffered severe injuries to both legs, believed to have been caused by a large shark. Local media reported at the time that he had lost both legs in the attack.

In an act of extraordinary bravery, Antic’s three friends immediately jumped into the water, pulled him to shore, and called for help. Their quick actions gave emergency responders the chance to transport him to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition until his death.

Marine biologists note that Sydney Harbor has seen an increase in shark activity in recent years, particularly during summer months when water temperatures rise and more people engage in recreational water activities. The Jump Rock area, despite its popularity, has historically had sporadic shark sightings, though attacks have been rare.

The tragedy has reignited discussions about shark safety measures in Australian waterways. Local authorities have responded by increasing beach patrols and installing temporary warning signs at popular swimming spots throughout Sydney Harbor. Some community members are calling for expanded shark netting programs, though environmental groups have expressed concerns about their impact on marine ecosystems.

This fatal incident is part of a troubling trend across Australia. Dozens of beaches were closed this week following four separate shark attacks in just a few days along the country’s coastline. The recent cluster of incidents has alarmed coastal communities and prompted tourism officials to reassess safety protocols during the peak summer season.

Australia typically averages approximately 20 shark attacks per year, with fewer than three proving fatal, according to Reuters. However, the recent surge has raised concerns among marine safety experts and local authorities.

The increasing frequency of shark encounters has prompted the Australian government to allocate additional funding for research into shark behavior and prevention measures. Scientists are investigating whether changing ocean temperatures, shifting fish populations, or other environmental factors might be contributing to the uptick in incidents.

Following Antic’s death, local officials have announced plans for a community memorial service to honor his life. The Sydney Harbor Trust is also considering establishing a permanent safety awareness program in his memory.

Marine safety experts remind the public to observe warning signs, swim only in designated areas, avoid dawn and dusk swimming when sharks are most active, and stay out of the water when bleeding. They also stress that despite the recent attacks, shark encounters remain statistically rare events.

For now, a grieving family and community are left to mourn a young life lost too soon, as authorities continue working to ensure the safety of Australia’s beloved coastal waters.
