Orbán’s Disinformation Campaign Allegedly Crafted by Russian Strategists, Magyar Reveals

Hungarian opposition leader Péter Magyar has issued a stark warning about an imminent Russian-backed disinformation campaign aimed at influencing the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections. According to Magyar, who leads the opposition Tisza party, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s ruling Fidesz party is collaborating with Russian political strategists to launch a coordinated smear campaign in the coming days.

The campaign will reportedly target social media platforms, with a particular focus on TikTok, where artificially generated content is expected to circulate widely. “In the coming days, the Fidesz party, together with Russian services, will launch a smear and disinformation campaign that has already been tested in Moldova, primarily on social media, particularly on TikTok,” Magyar wrote in a recent Facebook post.

Magyar’s allegations come after investigative journalists uncovered evidence of Russian political operatives working in Hungary. These strategists are reportedly based at the Russian embassy in Budapest and have been specifically tasked with executing disinformation operations designed to interfere with Hungary’s electoral process.

The opposition leader provided specific details about the alleged operation, claiming that Fidesz has prepared 14 discrediting video clips created using artificial intelligence technology. These videos reportedly target Magyar himself as well as members of his family. According to Magyar, the disinformation will be distributed through networks of fake social media accounts, with account operators allegedly being compensated with “several tens of millions of forints” – equivalent to tens of thousands of euros.

In his public statement, Magyar directly called on Prime Minister Orbán to halt the planned operation and expel the Russian operatives from Hungarian territory. “I call on Viktor Orbán to immediately stop the planned series of election manipulations and expel the Russian agents from Hungary,” he stated. Magyar also issued a warning that “after April 12, all those who took part in these crimes will face trial.”

This development comes amid increasing concerns about foreign interference in European elections. Similar tactics have reportedly been deployed in Moldova, suggesting a pattern of Russian influence operations targeting democratic processes in countries within its perceived sphere of interest.

The allegations are particularly significant given Hungary’s complex relationship with Russia. Under Orbán’s leadership, Hungary has maintained closer ties with Moscow than most European Union members, often finding itself at odds with EU policy positions regarding Russia, particularly following the invasion of Ukraine.

Magyar, whose Tisza party represents a significant challenge to Orbán’s long-standing political dominance, had previously addressed Russia directly, urging Moscow to refrain from interfering in Hungarian elections while promising “balanced” relations should his party prevail.

The situation highlights the evolving nature of election interference in the digital age, where social media platforms like TikTok can be weaponized to spread disinformation rapidly among younger voters. The use of artificial intelligence to create convincing but fake content represents a particularly troubling development in electoral manipulation techniques.
