Nepal’s upcoming national election faces an unprecedented wave of AI-generated disinformation, raising serious concerns about electoral integrity in a nation still healing from recent political upheaval. As voters prepare to head to the polls on Thursday, fact-checkers and digital experts are sounding the alarm about sophisticated fake content spreading across social media platforms.

The election marks the first national polls since September 2025, when widespread protests led to the government’s collapse following a controversial social media ban. That civil unrest was primarily driven by young, tech-literate citizens frustrated by chronic unemployment and entrenched corruption among established political figures.

“In a country where digital literacy is low, people believe what they see,” warns Deepak Adhikari, editor of independent fact-checking organization NepalCheck. His team has been working overtime to identify manipulated images, fabricated quotes, and misleading claims circulating widely online.

Nepal’s electoral commission has attempted to implement some safeguards, but officials acknowledge they are playing catch-up against rapidly evolving technology. One commission representative, speaking on condition of anonymity, admitted: “We’re fighting 21st-century problems with 20th-century tools.”

Fact-checkers have identified several concerning trends, including deepfake videos of candidates making inflammatory statements they never actually said, manipulated photos showing fabricated crowd sizes at rallies, and false endorsements from international figures. These deceptive materials often spread faster than corrections can be issued.

Civil society organizations have established rapid-response teams to identify and debunk false information, but they face an uphill battle against algorithms that favor sensational content. International observers monitoring the election have also expressed concern about disinformation potentially undermining public confidence in electoral results.

The September 2025 protests that triggered this election were themselves partially fueled by online organizing, demonstrating the double-edged nature of digital platforms in Nepal’s evolving democracy. While social media enabled civic mobilization against government overreach, it now threatens to undermine the very electoral process that resulted from those protests.

For ordinary Nepali voters, particularly in rural areas with limited internet literacy, distinguishing between authentic and manipulated content presents a significant challenge. Community radio stations have attempted to bridge this gap by broadcasting fact-checking segments, but their reach remains limited.
