Pakistan security officials have uncovered what they describe as a sophisticated disinformation campaign allegedly orchestrated by operatives in India and Afghanistan, according to multiple security and media sources familiar with the situation.

The network reportedly utilized dozens of fake social media accounts to disseminate anti-Pakistan content across various platforms. Most notably, many of these accounts posed as Iranian citizens while actually being operated from locations in India and Afghanistan, officials claim.

“This appears to be a coordinated effort to shape negative narratives about Pakistan at a particularly sensitive time for regional dynamics,” said a security official who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter.

Intelligence sources indicate that while many of the social media operations were conducted through Afghanistan-based accounts, the strategic planning and direction allegedly came from India. The campaign reportedly aimed to damage Pakistan’s international standing and sow discord among Muslim-majority nations in the region.

The disinformation operation allegedly focused on several key objectives: isolating Pakistan diplomatically, creating tension between Pakistan and other Muslim countries, and disrupting broader regional relationships, including those involving the United States and Iran.

Among the false narratives pushed by the network was the claim that Pakistan was supplying oil to the United States—an allegation Pakistani officials have categorically denied as fabricated. Security analysts suggest such claims were strategically designed to create friction between Pakistan and oil-producing nations in the region.

“What we’re witnessing is a form of organized information warfare,” explained Dr. Hassan Ahmed, a cybersecurity expert at the Institute for Regional Security Studies in Islamabad. “The sophistication of these operations has increased significantly in recent years, with threat actors leveraging social media algorithms to maximize the spread of misleading content.”

The alleged campaign comes amid already strained relations between Pakistan and India, with both nuclear-armed neighbors having a long history of diplomatic tensions and military standoffs. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s complex relationship with Afghanistan has faced additional challenges since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

Digital disinformation has become an increasingly prevalent tool in regional geopolitics across South Asia. A 2022 report by the Digital Forensic Research Lab documented a 64% increase in coordinated inauthentic behavior targeting political and security issues in the region compared to previous years.

Pakistani authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution when consuming social media content, particularly unverified claims about foreign policy or security matters. Officials maintain that building public resilience against disinformation is crucial for national security.

“The public should be aware that foreign entities may attempt to create mistrust between citizens and state institutions through manipulated narratives,” said a spokesperson for Pakistan’s Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. “Verifying information through reliable sources before sharing it is essential to combat these threats.”

Regional experts note that this incident highlights the evolving nature of conflict in South Asia, where traditional military confrontations are increasingly supplemented or even replaced by information operations designed to influence public opinion.

Pakistani authorities say they continue to monitor digital platforms for coordinated inauthentic behavior and are working with international partners to develop more effective countermeasures against disinformation campaigns.

As tensions persist across the region, the battle for narrative control in the digital space appears likely to intensify, presenting new challenges for governments, tech platforms, and citizens alike.
