Viral Temple Attack Video Falsely Labeled with Communal Angle
A video showing a man brandishing a cleaver and threatening people at a temple in Madhya Pradesh has been circulating widely on social media with false communal claims, investigation reveals.
The footage, which shows the assailant intimidating and pushing two individuals at what is claimed to be the Chintaman Ganesh Temple in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh, has been shared with misleading allegations that the attacker is Muslim and was targeting a Hindu priest in a “deadly attack.”
The video gained significant traction after being shared by several influential social media accounts, including X user Oxomiya Jiyori (@SouleFacts) on March 17, who has previously been identified as spreading misinformation with communal overtones. Another prominent user, Jitendra Pratap Singh (@jpsin1), who is followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on X, shared the clip with similar claims, garnering over 150,000 views.
Singh’s post alleged that “a Muslim entered with a sword inside the ancient Chintaman Ganesh Temple in Sehore, Madhya Pradesh, and attempted to kill the temple priest,” while criticizing Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav for purportedly ignoring attacks on Hindu temples and priests.
However, fact-checking reveals these claims to be entirely false. The incident is not recent but occurred in July 2025, according to a report by Bhaskar English published on July 26, 2025.
More significantly, police records and media reports identify the assailant not as a Muslim man but as Mahesh Yadav, who confronted individuals at the temple over a financial dispute. According to these reports, Yadav had allegedly spent money on a legal case related to the priest and claimed the amount was not repaid, leading him to enter the temple premises with a knife to recover his dues.
The Sehore Superintendent of Police confirmed Yadav’s identity in a press briefing shared on X. Authorities have charged Yadav under Sections 296 and 351(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), as well as Section 25 of the Arms Act, according to Sehore CSP Dr. Abhinandana Sharma.
This incident highlights a concerning pattern of old videos being repurposed and shared with false communal narratives on social media platforms. Such misrepresentation can inflame tensions between religious communities in India, where communal sensitivity remains high.
The rapid spread of this misinformation is particularly troubling given the significant reach of the accounts involved. Jitendra Pratap Singh’s connection to the Prime Minister through social media raises questions about the responsibility of influential users in verifying information before sharing potentially divisive content.
Digital misinformation researchers have repeatedly warned about the dangers of such false narratives, especially when they target religious institutions or attempt to portray incidents as religiously motivated when they are not.
This case underscores the importance of verifying sources before sharing content on social media and the critical role that fact-checking organizations play in debunking false information that could otherwise contribute to communal discord.
As social media continues to serve as a primary news source for many, the incident serves as a reminder of how easily outdated or decontextualized content can be manipulated to promote divisive narratives.
