The rush to identify suspects following tragic events can lead to devastating consequences for innocent people, disinformation experts warned this week after false accusations targeted an Ontario woman in connection with the recent Tumbler Ridge, B.C. shootings.
RCMP officials took the unusual step Friday of explicitly refuting misinformation that had spread widely online. Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald released a confirmed photo of the actual shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, while specifically addressing false accusations against a person named Zylii Strang who had no connection to the case.
“Zylii — this did not need to happen. We know you are not involved,” McDonald stated during the press conference.
The misidentification appears to have stemmed partially from name similarities. McDonald explained that the wrongly accused individual shared a surname with Jennifer Strang, who also went by Jennifer Jacobs – the mother of the actual shooter.
Ahmed Al-Rawi, a Simon Fraser University communication professor and director of the Disinformation Project, pointed to underlying prejudices as a key factor in the spread of false information.
“Biases and prejudices resulted in people spreading images of innocent transgender people after it emerged the shooter was trans,” Al-Rawi explained. He added that some individuals may have been motivated by potential financial gain from viral posts, while others became entangled in conspiracy theories.
This phenomenon reflects a troubling pattern in the digital age, according to Heidi Tworek, assistant professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. She noted that while public curiosity about crime details before official information is released has always existed, social media has “massively accelerated” this tendency.
“We’ve seen in multiple cases, not just this one, these misidentifications of people that have had tremendous deleterious consequences for those innocent individuals who are not at all connected to these tragedies,” Tworek said.
She highlighted the fundamental tension between official investigation timelines and public demand for immediate information, creating fertile ground for misinformation. “The speed at which official investigations can move versus how fast people want to know things always creates this kind of base in which conspiracy theories flourish.”
The consequences for the wrongly accused have been severe. According to Agence France-Presse, Zylii Strang’s mother Krista reported that her 25-year-old daughter was “devastated” and afraid to leave her home after being misidentified online.
“I don’t understand how (her profile) was linked to this crime other than my child being transgender and having (the) last name Strang,” Krista Strang told AFP.
The situation prompted some community members to take action against the spread of misinformation. British Columbia resident Melissa Antoinette posted videos across multiple platforms urging people to remove misleading images of Strang.
“I feel absolutely terrible for anybody to have their image attached to any sort of horrific event or anything that they didn’t do,” Antoinette said. She reported “so much hate” in online comments that she felt compelled to report many to social media platforms.
Notably, some media organizations were among those who initially shared incorrect images, contributing to the problem.
The Tumbler Ridge shooting has sparked widespread concern across Canadian communities. Mark Deeley, a teacher at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School who protected his class during the incident, addressed the situation on Facebook Sunday, condemning those using the tragedy to target transgender people.
“I do not and will not exacerbate the intolerance with hate. My humanity refuses it,” Deeley wrote, emphasizing that love is the only effective response to hate. “We need voices that are louder than those who would deny someone’s right to exist as their true self.”
Deputy Commissioner McDonald acknowledged the heightened public anxiety following the incident. “We are mindful that public and media response and coverage can increase false reports, but can also bring forward serious complaints,” he said.
Experts continue to emphasize the need for responsible information sharing during crisis events, particularly as social media enables unprecedented speed in the dissemination of unverified claims, often leaving innocent individuals caught in what Tworek describes as “the crossfire” of public speculation.
