Israeli Hostages Released Amid Wave of Misinformation on Social Media

After 738 days in captivity, the remaining living Israeli hostages have been freed from Gaza in a recent ceasefire agreement. However, their release has been accompanied by a surge of false and misleading claims on social media, creating confusion and deepening polarization around the Israel-Gaza conflict.

The spreading of misinformation has become particularly intense following the latest hostage exchange, with numerous unverified claims going viral across multiple platforms and languages.

One widely circulated claim by far-right activist Laura Loomer stated that “All of the female hostages are dead,” attempting to stoke outrage. This assertion is demonstrably false.

The October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken to Gaza. While the most recent release on October 13, 2025 involved 20 male hostages, multiple female hostages had been freed in previous exchanges.

During the November 2023 ceasefire, several women and children were released. On January 19, 2025, Hamas freed 33 hostages, including three women: Romi Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher, and Emily Damari. Just days later, on January 25, four female Israeli soldiers—Karina Ariev, Liri Albag, Daniella Gilboa, and Naama Levy—were also released.

According to the Israeli Foreign Affairs Ministry, a total of 117 hostages have been freed so far, with the Israeli Defence Forces confirming that no more living Israeli hostages remain in Hamas captivity. Tragically, the bodies of at least 27 hostages who were killed are still being held by Hamas.

Another misleading claim involved footage purportedly showing Hamas fighters in military uniforms celebrating the recent ceasefire. A video showing uniformed militants in vehicles garnered millions of views across platforms and languages, with captions suggesting it depicted current celebrations in Gaza.

A reverse image search revealed this footage actually dates back to January 2025, documenting celebrations during a previous ceasefire period that lasted from January 19 to March 18, 2025. The misrepresentation of older footage as current events has been a recurring pattern in social media posts about the conflict.

Similarly, a video of a luxury BMW M4 driving through rubble-strewn streets was shared with the caption: “Nothing like rolling out in your brand new $170,000 BMW M4 to celebrate the end of the ‘Gaza Genocide’ that never existed.” This video actually dates back to May 2025, months before the current ceasefire. The post also exaggerated the vehicle’s value—the base model starts at approximately $80,875, not $170,000.

The post’s denial of genocide in Gaza contradicts assessments by UN commissions, Israeli NGOs, and the International Association of Genocide Scholars, who have characterized the scale of killings as genocidal.

Perhaps most disturbing was a viral claim purporting to show Israeli booby-trapped children’s toys in Gaza. A post viewed 3.5 million times showed images of a purple Tinky Winky Teletubby stuffed animal containing an explosive device, claiming Gaza civil defense officials had discovered such traps.

A reverse image search proved these images were taken from a July 2018 video created by Project Masam, a Saudi-funded humanitarian group that clears landmines in Yemen—one of the world’s most mine-contaminated countries. While Gaza civil defense spokespersons reportedly made claims about booby-trapped toys, no evidence has emerged supporting this specific allegation.

These examples highlight the challenges in navigating information about the Israel-Gaza conflict, where emotional and political stakes run high. As the newly implemented ceasefire brings hope for lasting peace, distinguishing fact from fiction remains crucial for understanding the complex reality on the ground.
