In a pointed response to ongoing allegations, Housing Minister Kolusu Parthasarathy has accused the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) of fabricating claims about Andhra Pradesh’s liquor policy to create public unrest.

Speaking at a press conference in Vijayawada on Saturday, Parthasarathy defended the coalition government’s approach to liquor distribution, emphasizing its focus on ensuring consumer safety through the availability of established national brands. This marks a significant departure from previous practices under the YSRCP administration, which he claimed involved the distribution of “unnamed and illicit liquor” that posed substantial health risks.

“Even after their electoral defeat, YSRCP leaders continue to spread falsehoods without any shame,” Parthasarathy stated. The Minister referenced extensive testing measures implemented by the current administration, noting that authorities had conducted inspections involving over 170,000 individuals with no confirmed cases of adverse effects from spurious alcohol.

Andhra Pradesh’s liquor industry has long been a significant revenue generator for the state, with annual turnover estimated in the billions of rupees. The sector has frequently become a political battleground, with successive governments implementing vastly different policies regarding pricing, availability, and regulation.

The current administration has introduced several technological measures to enhance transparency in liquor sales. “To ensure accountability and consumer safety, we’ve launched the AP Excise Suraksha App along with QR code and hologram verification systems,” Parthasarathy explained. “Consumers can now scan the QR code on any bottle to access comprehensive manufacturing details and verify authenticity.”

Another major reform has been the shift to digital payment systems for all liquor transactions, which the government claims has significantly improved financial transparency and reduced opportunities for corruption. This digital transformation aligns with broader national trends toward cashless transactions in regulated markets.

Border security has also been strengthened to combat smuggling and prevent the influx of illegal alcohol products, according to the Minister. This addresses longstanding concerns about cross-border movement of unregulated spirits, which has historically undermined both tax revenue and quality control efforts.

Parthasarathy drew a stark contrast between the current administration’s approach and that of its predecessor, asserting that the coalition government exclusively offers recognized national brands, while the YSRCP regime allegedly promoted “low-quality, unknown brands that posed a threat to public health.”

Looking forward, the Minister announced that a ministerial sub-committee has been established to review and reform the state’s liquor policy. “We will conduct public consultations to gather input from various stakeholders before implementing a new, improved policy framework,” he said, suggesting a more inclusive approach to regulation.

The dispute over liquor policy comes amid broader political tensions in Andhra Pradesh, where the coalition government led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has been working to distinguish its governance approach from that of the previous YSRCP administration under Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

Liquor policy in Andhra Pradesh has significant economic implications, affecting not only state revenue but also employment in distribution networks, retail outlets, and associated industries. The sector directly employs thousands across the state and indirectly supports many more livelihoods.

Consumer advocates have generally welcomed the increased transparency measures, though some have called for more comprehensive reforms addressing pricing and availability issues, particularly in rural areas where access to regulated products can be limited.

Neither the YSRCP nor former Chief Minister Reddy has issued an official response to Parthasarathy’s allegations as of this report.
