Rapper Vic Mensa Lauds IShowSpeed’s African Tour for Challenging Western Stereotypes

Rapper and actor Vic Mensa has praised content creator IShowSpeed’s recent 28-day livestream tour of Africa, describing it as a powerful force in dismantling long-held stereotypes about the continent among Western audiences.

During an appearance on the “One54 Africa” podcast Wednesday, Mensa discussed the significant cultural impact of Speed’s extensive journey, which took place from late December through January and covered 20 African nations including Nigeria, Senegal, and Kenya.

“Speed’s tour is singlehandedly undoing a massive amount of propaganda in the minds of so many,” Mensa said during the interview. “Not just the youth, either, like just in the minds of so many American people.”

The tour garnered substantial attention on social media platforms, where IShowSpeed—a 21-year-old streamer with millions of followers—documented his experiences across the continent. The journey culminated in Speed receiving an official Ghanaian passport, a moment that resonated deeply with viewers worldwide.

Mensa, who co-founded the Black Star Line Festival in Accra, Ghana, alongside Chance the Rapper, noted that the impact of Speed’s journey extended far beyond his core demographic. “I see elder black people. I see younger—I see white kids saying similar things like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know everyone wasn’t in loin cloths running from baboons,'” he explained.

The “Sundiata” artist argued that such misconceptions persist due to educational deficiencies and media distortion in the United States. “Americans are not educated. They are able to keep this massive finesse going because Americans are not educated. Americans not only don’t have education, they have constant propaganda that is anti-intellectual force-fed to them,” Mensa stated.

Speed’s livestream format created an unusually immersive experience for viewers, many of whom follow the creator’s content for hours daily. “It’s almost like they’re traveling with him,” Mensa observed. “You watch somebody go through a whole continent and some of these kids are probably watching him like five, 10 hours a day… They’re experiencing Africa with him.”

The rapper specifically highlighted a moment when Speed questioned why he couldn’t purchase diamonds in Botswana, despite the country being one of the world’s leading diamond producers—a poignant example of how the stream inadvertently highlighted continuing economic colonial legacies. “It’s literally eroding the colonial myth because that’s how they keep the thing going, is by these contracts and these false histories,” Mensa explained.

Digital content creators like Speed, whose real-time, unfiltered documentation reaches millions instantly, represent a new form of cultural exchange that bypasses traditional media narratives. This approach offers audiences direct visual exposure to places often misrepresented in Western media.

For Speed himself, the journey appears to have been transformative. “This tour opened my eyes… it sparked up something deep within me, very deep, like something from the root of me. It kinda talked to me in terms of like, I can do this,” the streamer reflected in a clip from his travels.

The conversation highlights the evolving role of social media personalities in cultural diplomacy and education, particularly when their massive platforms are used to showcase diverse global realities that challenge entrenched stereotypes.

This exchange between Mensa, an established artist with deep connections to Ghana, and Speed’s digital documentation of contemporary Africa illustrates how different forms of cultural engagement can complement each other in reshaping international perceptions and fostering greater understanding across continents.
