In a significant escalation of tensions surrounding the Israel-Gaza conflict, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese has become the target of a coordinated disinformation campaign led by Israeli lobbying group UN Watch, according to multiple sources. The controversy comes amid growing international scrutiny of Israel’s military actions in Gaza and recent strikes in Iran.

Albanese, who has served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories since May 2022, has emerged as one of the most prominent global voices advocating for Palestinian rights during the 28-month Israeli campaign in Gaza. Her outspoken criticisms have drawn the ire of Israeli officials, the U.S. government, and several Western nations that continue to support Israel’s military operations.

At the heart of the recent controversy is a video appearance Albanese made at a conference in Doha, where she warned of a growing “common enemy of humanity” – referring to what she described as an illegal system of corporate, media, military, and surveillance forces shaping global policies. UN Watch subsequently released what Albanese claims is an altered version of the video, falsely accusing her of calling Israel itself the “enemy of humanity.”

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot amplified these accusations, claiming Albanese had condemned Israel “as a people and a nation,” and called for her resignation. In response, Albanese told journalist Medhi Hasan that the edited video was “so rudimentary that it was almost insulting to human intelligence.”

Prior to this incident, Albanese had already faced significant pushback for her human rights work. In July 2025, she published a comprehensive study naming 60 global corporations allegedly profiting from Israel’s occupation and military actions in Gaza. The report highlighted U.S. weapons manufacturers at the center of what she described as a military-industrial complex using Gaza as a testing ground for new military technologies.

“The occupation and bombing of Gaza provided a testing ground for cutting-edge military capabilities: air defense platforms, drones, AI-powered targeting tools and even the US-led F-35 programme,” the report stated, noting that these weapons are later marketed as “battle proven” after being used against Palestinians.

The report also scrutinized financial industries, consulting firms, social media companies, and public relations agencies that Albanese claims help craft narratives that deflect blame and sanitize Israel’s military actions.

The intensifying attacks on Albanese come as U.S. and Israeli forces have conducted bombing campaigns in Iran, actions that have drawn international condemnation. Reports indicate that U.S. bombs struck a girls’ elementary school in Minab, Iran, resulting in 165 casualties, mostly children aged 7 to 12. Hours later, another strike reportedly hit a gymnasium in Lamerd, killing 20 young volleyball players.

Despite the significant civilian casualties, these incidents have received relatively limited coverage in Western media outlets. According to polls, only about a quarter of Americans support the military strikes against Iran.

Former UN official and human rights lawyer Craig Mokhiber has described what he calls a “US-Israeli Axis” as “the greatest threat facing humanity today,” citing ongoing military actions in multiple countries, attacks on international institutions, and “the dismantling of international law.”

The controversy surrounding Albanese reflects broader tensions within international institutions as they attempt to address complex geopolitical conflicts. Last year, over 700,000 people signed a petition nominating Albanese for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, demonstrating significant public support for her work despite the official opposition she faces.

As military operations expand throughout the Middle East, critics argue that what’s needed is a comprehensive examination of what writer Negin Owilaei calls “the American War Machine” and what Albanese describes as “the growing nexus of military and propaganda alliances” that threatens global stability and humanitarian principles.
