Ukrainian Officials Debunk Fabricated Video Claiming “Unknown Epidemic” in Armed Forces

Ukrainian security officials have exposed a disinformation campaign featuring a manipulated video claiming an outbreak of a mysterious deadly disease among Ukrainian soldiers. The Center for Countering Disinformation (CPD) of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council issued a warning about this fabricated content circulating on social media platforms.

The video in question purportedly shows a healthcare worker from an infectious diseases department in Dnipropetrovsk region describing what they call an “epidemic of unknown origin” allegedly affecting Ukraine’s military personnel. According to the false narrative, the supposed disease causes extreme fevers of 40°C and has a near 100% mortality rate.

“There are absolutely no official reports from any competent authorities about an epidemic in the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” the CPD statement emphasized. “The video displays obvious signs of falsification – the voice is artificially superimposed, with lip movements and gestures that don’t synchronize with the speech.”

Security analysts pointed out several red flags that reveal the video’s fabricated nature. The footage was deliberately shot to obscure the identity of the supposed medical professional, making verification impossible. Technical analysis shows clear evidence of manipulation in how the audio and video components fail to align properly.

The CPD also noted that distribution patterns raise suspicion. The content originated from an anonymous account created in late February that has posted only two videos on this specific topic, suggesting a targeted disinformation operation rather than legitimate reporting.

This false narrative appears designed to achieve multiple psychological objectives against Ukraine, according to security officials. “The purpose of this fake is to demoralize Ukrainian society, undermine trust in the healthcare system, and create the impression of a catastrophic situation within the military,” the CPD explained.

The emergence of this disinformation coincides with increased Russian information warfare activities targeting Ukrainian morale as the conflict continues into its third year. Such tactics have become increasingly sophisticated, often utilizing artificial intelligence and deepfake technologies to create convincing but entirely fabricated content.

This incident follows a broader pattern of information operations targeting Ukraine. Just days earlier, German TikTok users were exposed to a network of AI-generated content specifically designed to discredit Ukrainians, according to reports from Ukrainian media outlet UNN.

Information security experts have warned that as AI technology becomes more accessible, the spread of sophisticated fake videos will likely increase, requiring heightened vigilance from both officials and the public. The CPD continues to monitor social media channels for similar disinformation attempts and regularly publishes advisories to help citizens identify manipulated content.

Ukrainian authorities have urged citizens to rely only on official sources for information about public health and military matters, including verified government channels and established news organizations with proper fact-checking protocols.

The incident highlights the ongoing information battlefield that parallels physical combat, with digital disinformation campaigns becoming an increasingly prominent feature of modern conflict. As technology evolves, the challenge of distinguishing authentic content from sophisticated fakes presents a growing challenge for societies worldwide, particularly in conflict zones where information can directly impact public safety and national security.
