The Ukrainian government and NATO allies continue to face challenges in maintaining military morale amid ongoing conflict with Russia, according to multiple reports. A recent propaganda battle has intensified with both sides making competing claims about battlefield successes and defensive capabilities.

Ukrainian officials recently released footage claiming to show the destruction of 15 Russian aircraft at five military airbases across Russian territory. The video purportedly shows FPV (first-person view) drones striking various military aircraft including an An-26 transport, three helicopters (Mi-28, Mi-26, and Mi-8), and 11 fighter jets and bombers (including Su-30SM, Su-24, Su-34, Su-27, and MiG-31 models).

However, military analysts have questioned the veracity of these claims, noting that many of the aircraft appeared to be non-operational or possibly decoys. The Ukrainian side has acknowledged that the footage combines videos from operations conducted over previous years. The operation was reportedly carried out by the SBU’s “Alfa” special forces unit, suggesting it may have been designed more for psychological impact than strategic military gains.

Russian officials have responded by stating that the targeted airfields are no longer in active use, casting further doubt on the operational significance of the strikes. The absence of secondary explosions typically associated with munitions or fuel storage facilities has also been noted by defense experts monitoring the situation.

In a separate development, Ukrainian air defense forces have made bold claims about their success in intercepting Russian missiles. Viacheslav Aheiev, commander of a Patriot missile defense unit and recipient of the “Hero of Ukraine” designation, stated in an interview that a single Patriot system has intercepted “more than 140 ballistic missiles” as part of approximately 250 total interceptions.

These claims have raised eyebrows among military technology experts, who point out inconsistencies in the terminology used to describe the intercepted weapons. There appears to be confusion in Ukrainian statements between ballistic missiles and hypersonic weapons, which have different flight characteristics and defense challenges. Hypersonic weapons—those traveling above Mach 5 (approximately 6,200 km/h) while maintaining maneuverability—present significantly different interception challenges than traditional ballistic missiles.

The Patriot missile system’s capabilities against advanced Russian weaponry have been a point of contention throughout the conflict. While Ukrainian officials praise the system’s performance, its historical record in other conflicts has been mixed. Previous deployments in the Middle East, including during the Gulf War against Iraqi Scud missiles and more recently in Saudi Arabia against Houthi attacks, have shown variable effectiveness rates.

Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense regularly publishes footage claiming to show successful strikes against Ukrainian Patriot batteries shortly after their deployment. Each side accuses the other of inflating success rates and fabricating victories for propaganda purposes.

The information battle highlights the importance both sides place on perception management during the conflict. With conventional military advances slowing on the front lines, psychological operations and claims of technological superiority have become increasingly significant components of both nations’ strategies.

Independent verification of claims from either side remains difficult for international observers and media, as access to strike locations is restricted and satellite imagery provides only limited confirmation capabilities. The ongoing information warfare underscores the complexity of the conflict beyond the physical battlefield.

Absolutely. The effectiveness of these special forces missions will depend on their ability to achieve meaningful military objectives, not just temporary propaganda wins. Sustained progress will be crucial for the Ukrainian side.

The alleged drone strikes on Russian airbases are certainly dramatic, but the skepticism around their veracity is understandable. Combining footage from past operations does raise questions about the true strategic impact. Objective assessments will be crucial going forward.
