In the United Arab Emirates, antisemitism is considered a crime rather than an opinion, according to Amjad Taha, a Strategic and Political Affairs Expert from the UAE. Taha made these remarks during an interview with Arutz Sheva-Israel National News while attending the European Jewish Association (EJA) conference in Poland.

“In my beloved country UAE, people of the Jewish community are living in peace, prosperity and coexistence alongside two hundred other nations from all various backgrounds,” Taha explained. He emphasized that this inclusive environment extends to Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, and numerous other ethnicities and minorities residing in the Emirates.

The UAE has made significant strides in fostering economic ties with Israel since the Abraham Accords were signed in 2020, normalizing relations between the two nations. According to Taha, bilateral trade between Israel and the UAE has surpassed $3 billion within just the last four years, representing a remarkable achievement in a relatively short timeframe.

This growing economic relationship encompasses diverse sectors including agriculture, artificial intelligence, and various technological fields. “The cooperation is there and it exists,” Taha affirmed, highlighting the multifaceted nature of UAE-Israel relations that extends beyond mere trade to include the exchange of ideas and innovation.

The UAE has emerged as a beacon of religious tolerance in the Middle East, with policies that actively promote interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence. The country has invested in building religious infrastructure for various faiths, including the construction of synagogues, and has implemented legal frameworks that protect religious minorities.

During the interview, Taha also addressed the complex geopolitical situation in the region, expressing relief about the release of hostages but criticizing what he perceives as ideological capture in Europe. “In Europe, many of the elites, especially on the left, are hostages of Islamist propaganda,” he stated, referencing groups such as Hamas in Gaza and what he described as “the Muslim Brotherhood led army” in Sudan.

Taha’s comments reflect broader concerns about the rise of antisemitism in Europe, which has seen an alarming increase in recent years. His perspective offers a counterpoint to this trend, showcasing how the UAE has chosen a different path by criminalizing antisemitism and embracing Jewish communities as part of its multicultural society.

The UAE’s approach to religious tolerance has been part of a strategic vision to position itself as a global hub for business, tourism, and cultural exchange. This policy has not only enhanced its international reputation but has also contributed to its economic diversification efforts away from oil dependency.

The economic relationship between Israel and the UAE continues to grow, with joint ventures in technology, healthcare, and renewable energy showing particular promise. Israeli expertise in water management and agricultural technology has proven especially valuable in addressing the UAE’s environmental challenges.

Taha’s observations at the EJA conference highlight the contrast between the UAE’s policies of religious tolerance and the rising tide of antisemitism in parts of Europe and elsewhere. His statements underline the potential for peaceful coexistence in a region historically marked by conflict, suggesting that the UAE-Israel relationship could serve as a model for other nations in the Middle East and beyond.

While the UAE’s efforts to promote religious tolerance are positive, the claims about ‘Islamist propaganda’ holding Europeans ‘captive’ seem rather sweeping and unsubstantiated. I’d be curious to see more nuanced analysis on this topic.

  2. While the UAE’s efforts to combat antisemitism are commendable, I’m wary of overstating the degree of ‘peace, prosperity and coexistence’ for all groups. Systematic discrimination and human rights issues still persist in many parts of the region.

  3. Interesting perspective from the UAE expert. The UAE’s efforts to promote interfaith harmony and economic ties with Israel are noteworthy, especially given the complex geopolitics in the region. I wonder how this compares to the situation in other Middle Eastern countries.
