In a significant move against online misinformation, the Indian government has ordered the blocking of the X (formerly Twitter) account belonging to Prateek Sharma, who operates under the pseudonym “Dr Nimo Yadav,” for allegedly spreading AI-generated fake news. The action specifically targets content that authorities claim falsely implicated Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The social media platform X disclosed this information to the Delhi High Court on Monday, March 30, according to a report by Bar and Bench. Both the court and Sharma were given access to the details of the blocking order.

According to the government directive, Sharma’s account contained posts deemed defamatory to the government and Prime Minister Modi, utilizing AI-edited content, manipulated images, and videos to spread misinformation. The order emphasized that such misleading content had the potential to disrupt public order and posed a potential threat to internal security.

The blocking order documentation was presented to Judge Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav, who is presiding over Sharma’s petition seeking disclosure of the government’s directive. Sharma has argued that the restriction has caused him financial loss as his social media account serves as a source of income and that the ban interferes with his professional responsibilities.

During proceedings, Sharma’s legal representative stated they would have taken appropriate remedial action had they been informed about the specific objectionable content that triggered the ban. In response, government counsel requested additional time to explore whether there might be a suitable process to formally consider Sharma’s submission. Judge Kaurav granted this request.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) issued the directive on March 18 under provisions of the Information Technology Act. Court documents reveal that the government’s order extended beyond Sharma’s account to include 11 other X handles allegedly involved in propagating similar false narratives. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for the following week.

This case highlights the growing tension between government efforts to combat misinformation and questions about freedom of expression in India’s digital space. The use of AI to create and spread misinformation has become an increasing concern for authorities worldwide, with India taking a particularly firm stance against content it deems harmful to national interests or public figures.

Digital rights experts have noted that while combating fake news is critical, there must be transparent processes for account suspension that allow affected users to understand specifically which content violated regulations and provide opportunities to appeal such decisions.

The case also underscores the evolving nature of social media platforms as income sources for content creators, raising questions about the economic impact of account suspensions. For individuals like Sharma who claim to derive livelihood from their online presence, sudden restrictions without clear communication about violations can have significant professional consequences.

This action comes amid India’s broader efforts to regulate digital content, with the government increasingly utilizing provisions under the IT Act to address what it considers harmful online material. Critics of these measures have expressed concerns about potential overreach, while supporters maintain that such regulations are necessary to maintain social harmony and prevent the spread of dangerous misinformation in a country with over 800 million internet users.

The court’s final decision in this matter could set an important precedent for how similar cases involving AI-generated content and misinformation are handled in the future.
