Vetrimaaran Sparks Controversy with Comments on “Hate Propaganda” Films at Neelira Trailer Launch

Acclaimed Tamil filmmaker Vetrimaaran has ignited speculation across social media following remarks made during the premiere of war drama “Neelira,” with many interpreting his comments as a veiled criticism of the recently released “Dhurandhar 2: The Revenge,” starring Ranveer Singh.

The National Award-winning director of “Vada Chennai” praised debutant filmmaker Someetharan’s work on “Neelira,” a film based on actual events from the Sri Lankan civil war, while simultaneously delivering pointed criticism of what he described as “hate propaganda” in contemporary cinema.

“Numerous films invest millions of rupees, hoping to generate hundreds of crores through violence or animosity,” Vetrimaaran stated during the event. “This film does not aim to propagate hate, stereotype a race, a community, or a religious group.”

The timing and specificity of his comments led many online commentators to connect them to Aditya Dhar’s recently released action sequel. While Vetrimaaran didn’t explicitly name “Dhurandhar 2,” the context of his remarks appeared targeted at high-budget films that leverage nationalist sentiments.

Vetrimaaran emphasized the importance of authentic storytelling, particularly for marginalized communities. “If we do not share our narratives, our existence becomes defined by what our adversaries claim,” he explained, highlighting what he perceives as limitations on creative freedom in India’s current climate. “We lack the freedom to narrate our own tales.”

The filmmaker further elaborated on the dangers of propaganda in modern media, suggesting it can distort collective memory and historical understanding. “Propaganda can shape memory. Memory is quite unstable, as we all recognize who suffered the most during demonetization and how many lives were impacted when people queued up,” he noted, referencing the controversial 2016 Indian currency demonetization.

In an intriguing moment during the event, Vetrimaaran also questioned the “Neelira” production team about how they secured Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) approval without facing the revising committee process. This comment appears particularly relevant given recent challenges faced by other Tamil films, notably Thalapathy Vijay’s “Jana Nayagan,” which remains uncertified after being submitted to the revising committee, delaying its planned January 2026 release.

“Neelira,” produced by filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj and actor Rana Daggubati, stars Naveen Chandra, Sananth, and Roopa Koduvayur. The film is scheduled for theatrical release on April 3, 2026.

Online reactions to Vetrimaaran’s comments have been mixed. Some social media users argued that the filmmaker’s own works contain propagandistic elements, while others suggested he should focus on creating engaging cinema comparable to “Dhurandhar.” One commenter noted that while all films contain some form of propaganda, at least “Dhurandhar” delivered as entertainment.

The controversy highlights ongoing tensions in Indian cinema regarding nationalist narratives, artistic freedom, and the responsibility of filmmakers when addressing sensitive political and historical subjects. It also underscores the increasingly polarized environment in which films depicting conflict or historical events must navigate both censorship challenges and public scrutiny.

Vetrimaaran’s next project, “Arasan,” is set within his “Vada Chennai” cinematic universe and features Silambarasan TR in the lead role, with supporting performances from Vijay Sethupathi and Yogalakshmi.
