Family Disputes Defense Secretary Hegseth’s Claims While Trump Ally Caught in Immigration Controversy

The father of a U.S. service member killed in the ongoing conflict with Iran has directly contradicted statements made by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth about families’ support for continued military action. Charles Simmons, whose son Tech. Sgt. Tyler H. Simmons was among the six service members who died in the conflict, told NBC News he never expressed the sentiment Hegseth attributed to bereaved families.

Following meetings with the families, Hegseth claimed in a press briefing that each family had urged the administration to “Finish this. Honor their sacrifice. Do not waver. Do not stop until the job is done.” Simmons flatly denied making such statements, telling reporters, “No, I didn’t say anything along those lines.”

The grieving father instead expressed reservations about the conflict, stating he has “questions” about the war. “I understand there’s a lot of peril that goes into making decisions like this, and I just certainly hope the decisions being made are necessary,” Simmons told NBC News.

In a separate development highlighting potential abuses of power within the previous administration, a New York Times investigation revealed that Paolo Zampolli, a former modeling agent credited with introducing Donald Trump to Melania, allegedly leveraged his connections to have his ex-girlfriend detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

According to reports, Zampolli contacted a top Trump administration official, David Venturella, after learning his Brazilian ex-girlfriend had been arrested in Miami. Claiming she was in the country illegally, he allegedly requested she be placed in ICE detention. Following Venturella’s intervention, the woman was transferred to ICE custody and subsequently deported. Zampolli, whose name also appears in the Epstein files, has denied making such requests.

Meanwhile, the Department of Justice has issued a subpoena to former FBI Director James Comey as part of what appears to be an ongoing effort to investigate what Trump has characterized as a “grand conspiracy” by Democratic officials to undermine his 2016 election victory and subsequent presidency. This follows a similar unsuccessful attempt to indict Comey last year.

In positive developments, journalist Estefany Rodríguez was released Thursday after spending more than two weeks in immigration detention, marking a victory for press freedom advocates.

Additionally, a federal judge ruled this week that Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. overstepped his authority when declaring that doctors providing gender-transition treatments for minors “do not meet professionally recognized standards.” The declaration had served as the basis for potential investigations into providers of gender-affirming care and threats to withhold federal Medicare and Medicaid funding. The ruling, which represents a significant protection for access to gender-affirming care, is expected to be appealed by the administration.

These developments come amid heightened political tensions as the administration continues to face challenges on multiple fronts, from military engagements abroad to contentious domestic policy decisions regarding immigration and healthcare.
