Over 300 Crimeans Indoctrinated by Russian Propaganda Die Fighting Against Ukraine
A sobering analysis by the Crimean Tatar Resource Center has revealed that 318 individuals born in independent Ukraine and educated under Russian occupation have died fighting against their homeland. This information was shared by Eskender Bariyev, head of the board of the Crimean Tatar Resource Center and member of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People.
“The Crimean Tatar Resource Center analyzed how many people who were born in independent Ukraine and studied in schools under Russian programs, having taken up arms, went to fight for money against their own people and were subsequently killed by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Unfortunately, we have identified 318 such individuals,” Bariyev stated.
The human rights defender emphasized that despite widespread discussions about the indoctrination and militarization of Ukrainian children in occupied territories, there has been little concrete analysis of the real consequences or effective countermeasures against these propaganda efforts.
According to Bariyev, Russia’s systematic propaganda campaign in Crimea has been devastatingly effective. “It took Putin almost 12 years to wash the brains of Crimeans who were born and raised in Ukraine, so that they would, without shame or conscience, take up arms and go to fight against their own country and its citizens,” he explained.
The situation highlights Russia’s substantial financial investment in propaganda throughout illegally occupied Ukrainian territories. Bariyev noted that Russia has successfully implemented “KGB-style practices” that have been refined through military aggression and subsequent occupation in numerous countries.
The consequences of this propaganda machine are dire. Those who embrace Russian ideology either become victims of the occupation regime or lose critical thinking abilities, making them easily manipulated into becoming what Bariyev describes as “cannon fodder” for Russia’s imperial ambitions.
The demographic situation in Crimea presents additional concerns. With each passing year of Russian occupation, the generation of people born in Ukrainian Crimea diminishes, while children who have grown up under occupation have been heavily influenced by Russian indoctrination and militarization programs. This year alone, 147 individuals were identified as “Putin’s accomplices” in Crimea.
The total death toll among Crimeans fighting for Russia has now exceeded 1,800 people, according to Bariyev. However, he emphasized that many residents have actively resisted participation in what he termed a “brotherly war.”
“In 2022 we received hundreds of messages and calls from people who tried to do everything possible to avoid taking part in a brotherly war and not to become accomplices in Russian crimes. I am glad that the majority of the population of the Crimean peninsula acted exactly that way,” Bariyev said.
The former coordinator of the resistance movement “Yellow Ribbon” noted that many Crimeans understand they are being used as expendable resources in Russia’s war effort. The increasing militarization of the peninsula has generated significant fear and outrage among local populations who see themselves caught in a dangerous geopolitical struggle.
The situation represents a troubling aspect of Russia’s occupation strategy, where educational systems and media have been weaponized to transform Ukrainian citizens into combatants against their own nation. The long-term implications for Crimea’s youth and the future of the peninsula remain concerning as Russian indoctrination continues to shape the worldview of a generation raised under occupation.
As the war continues, human rights organizations warn that these patterns of indoctrination may be replicated in other occupied territories, creating long-lasting societal divisions that will persist long after any potential military resolution.
