Russian propagandists have been caught fabricating a false story about a Ukrainian soldier allegedly killing his own child, in what appears to be the latest attempt to discredit the Armed Forces of Ukraine through manipulated information.

Several Russian Telegram channels recently shared what looked like a screenshot of a news headline claiming that a serviceman from the 47th Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces had killed his three-year-old son in the Sumy region. The posts included images and details designed to make the fabricated incident appear legitimate.

However, an investigation has revealed the story to be entirely fabricated. The propagandists repurposed information about a tragic but unrelated incident that occurred in the Czech Republic, not Ukraine. The images spread alongside the false claims show a dormitory in the Czech village of Dragomyšl, which has no connection whatsoever to Ukraine or its armed forces.

The actual incident referenced in the fabrication occurred on March 3, when a young child in a Czech dormitory sustained serious injuries due to abuse and subsequently died in a hospital the following day. Russian information operators appropriated photographs of this Czech dormitory and misrepresented them as being from Sumy, Ukraine, to create the false narrative.

Verification with official sources further confirms the story’s fabrication. There are no reports of such an incident on the website of the Main Directorate of the National Police of Ukraine in the Sumy region. Additionally, no legitimate Ukrainian news outlets have reported on such a case, which would typically receive significant coverage if it had actually occurred.

This fabrication appears to be part of a broader pattern of Russian disinformation tactics aimed at undermining support for Ukrainian defense forces. By creating and circulating false stories that portray Ukrainian soldiers as violent criminals, Russian propaganda channels attempt to drive wedges between the military and civilian population and erode international support for Ukraine.

“Russia continues its systematic campaign to discredit the Ukrainian Armed Forces, attempting to sow hostility between the military and civilians and portray Ukrainian defenders in a negative light,” noted a Ukrainian security analyst familiar with Russian information operations.

This isn’t the first such attempt. Ukrainian fact-checkers have previously debunked similar false claims spread by Russian propaganda networks, including fabricated stories about the alleged murder of a recruitment center serviceman and false reports about the mobilization of Ukrainians with autism.

The targeting of the 47th Brigade is likely not coincidental, as the unit has been involved in successful defensive operations against Russian forces, making it a particular target for Russian information warfare.

Since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, Russia has maintained parallel information operations alongside its military campaign, with fake news and manipulated media becoming increasingly sophisticated. Digital forensics experts point to a growing trend of Russian propagandists misappropriating real tragedies from other countries and reframing them as supposed Ukrainian atrocities.

Ukrainian authorities continue to urge both domestic and international audiences to verify information through multiple credible sources, particularly when encountering inflammatory claims about military personnel or controversial incidents that appear primarily on social media platforms.

Repurposing information about a tragic incident in the Czech Republic and falsely attributing it to Ukrainian forces is a shameful and manipulative tactic. It’s clear that the Russian regime will use any means necessary to spread their narrative, regardless of the truth.

I’m not surprised that Russian propaganda is resorting to such fabricated stories. They seem desperate to discredit Ukraine’s military, even if it means making up completely false narratives. This is a new level of dishonesty.
