Russian disinformation campaigns are targeting Ukrainian refugees by spreading false claims about a supposed theft at the Louvre Museum in Paris, according to a recent report from the Center for Countering Disinformation.

The fabricated story alleges that French police arrested two Ukrainian refugees for stealing valuable artifacts from the world-famous museum. The false reports use authentic photographs to create an illusion of credibility, but the images actually show an incident in Poland where suspects were detained for attempting to steal a tractor. “Such disinformation campaigns pursue one goal – to discredit Ukrainian refugees in Europe and create a negative image of Ukrainians,” the Center for Countering Disinformation stated in their report.

The fabrication appears designed to exploit recent legitimate news about an actual theft at the Louvre. On Sunday, thieves did steal eight pieces of jewelry from the museum’s Apollo Gallery, which houses France’s historic crown jewels collection. Museum officials have described the stolen items as having “incalculable” value.

French authorities have since arrested two French nationals in connection with the actual robbery. One suspect was apprehended at an airport attempting to flee the country.
