In a concerning development, Russian disinformation campaigns have deployed increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence techniques to spread false narratives about Ukrainian military operations, according to Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation.

The center recently identified a fabricated video circulating on social media platforms that purports to show Ukrainian soldiers struggling in flooded trenches near Vovchansk. Officials have confirmed the footage is entirely generated using AI technology.

“Enemy resources are spreading a new false AI video, allegedly filmed at Ukrainian positions in the Vovchansk direction, about the ‘difficult situation’ of Ukrainian soldiers at the front,” the center reported through its official Telegram channel.

The manipulated footage depicts a soldier in military uniform navigating a flooded trench where other personnel appear to be stationed. The narrative accompanying the video falsely claims Ukrainian fighters had “fallen into their own trap” after the supposed destruction of the Belgorod reservoir dam.

Experts at the center quickly identified multiple telltale signs of AI generation, including unnatural movements, inconsistent lighting, and artificial facial expressions characteristic of current generative AI limitations. This represents an evolution in Russia’s disinformation tactics, moving beyond simple video editing to completely fabricated scenarios.

“The purpose of the fake is to undermine trust in the decisions of the Ukrainian military command and sow doubts about the effectiveness of the actions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces,” the center explained. “Such materials are produced by the enemy to create the illusion of chaos at the front and demoralize society.”

This incident is not isolated. The center also noted Russian propagandists are circulating another fabricated video claiming to show a Ukrainian serviceman tied to a tree as punishment for alleged drunkenness, further attempting to portray Ukrainian forces as disorganized and poorly disciplined.

Military analysts suggest these intensifying disinformation efforts may correspond with strategic developments in the Vovchansk sector, where Ukrainian forces have been effectively countering Russian advances. Creating a false narrative of chaos and poor conditions could be an attempt to offset Russian tactical failures in the region.

The use of AI-generated content marks an escalation in the information warfare that has accompanied the physical conflict since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. While earlier propaganda relied primarily on misleading context or edited authentic footage, the emergence of completely fabricated scenarios presents new challenges for fact-checkers and information security organizations.

Digital forensics experts note that while current AI-generated content still contains identifiable flaws, the technology is rapidly improving. This evolution threatens to create an environment where distinguishing authentic battlefield footage from fabrications becomes increasingly difficult for the general public.

The Center for Countering Disinformation has urged citizens and international observers to exercise heightened scrutiny when viewing purported battlefield footage, especially content spreading on platforms like Telegram, which has become a primary vector for unverified information from the conflict zone.

Media literacy organizations have emphasized several key indicators that can help identify AI-generated content, including unnatural lighting, inconsistent shadows, strange body proportions, and unusual movement patterns. They also recommend verifying information through multiple reliable sources before accepting dramatic claims about battlefield conditions.

As the conflict continues, information security experts warn that both the sophistication and volume of such disinformation attempts will likely increase, making the work of verification organizations increasingly crucial to maintaining an accurate understanding of developments on the ground.
