Putin’s Coughing Fit Raises New Health Questions After Kremlin’s Video Blunder

Vladimir Putin was forced to halt the recording of a televised International Women’s Day address after breaking into an uncontrollable coughing fit, according to footage that was mistakenly released to the public before Kremlin censors could intervene.

The 73-year-old Russian leader’s struggle was captured in raw footage that showed him attempting to deliver his message before being overcome by coughing. After trying to suppress it, Putin eventually told his production team: “You know, let me say it again, because I had a tickle in my throat. I almost coughed.”

When offered water by someone off-camera, Putin declined, insisting: “No. Let’s continue. Let’s get to work…” After composing himself, he restarted the recording with a fresh take of his congratulatory message to Russian women.

The unedited sequence was initially broadcast on official state channels and shared on social media platforms before being hastily replaced with a sanitized version that removed all evidence of the coughing episode.

This rare glimpse behind the carefully managed public image of the Russian president has reignited speculation about his health. It follows previous investigative reports claiming Putin routinely travels with a team of medical specialists, including top thyroid cancer surgeon Dr. Yevgeny Selivanov from Moscow’s Central Clinical Hospital.

War analyst Denis Kazansky suggested the leak might have been deliberate, saying: “You build an image of a young and strong leader, and then someone leaks one video, and this whole image collapses, and a sick, decrepit old man appears before everyone. It seems that it was leaked on purpose, because the sick senile man has annoyed everyone.”

The incident marks the second apparent propaganda misstep by the Kremlin in a single week. Earlier, an unflattering “death mask” image of Putin was captured through a crack in a Kremlin door during a meeting with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko. That unfiltered footage revealed a visibly aged Putin with a sagging chin and tired eyes – a stark contrast to the vigorous image typically presented in official media.

Health experts note that persistent coughing can be associated with various conditions, including thyroid cancer, which can cause symptoms such as hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, and a dry, scratchy cough. According to previous reports, Putin has been accompanied by as many as 13 medical professionals during his travels, with Dr. Selivanov – who specializes in thyroid issues – among his regular medical entourage.

The Russian leader had been recording a message for International Women’s Day, a significant holiday in Russia, telling women: “Of course, it’s very challenging to juggle everything — to impress with your beauty and charm while simultaneously being hard-working, determined, and resilient. But you manage it.”

Independent analysts have long scrutinized Putin’s health, with previous reports suggesting he may have suffered from abdominal cancer and other ailments. Some observers have even speculated that cancer medication could have affected his judgment when he ordered the invasion of Ukraine.

The Kremlin has consistently denied all health-related rumors, maintaining that Putin is in excellent condition. In recent public appearances, the Russian leader has indeed appeared more energetic than during certain periods in previous years, and has spoken about his expectations for longevity.

This latest incident comes as Putin continues to navigate both domestic challenges and international tensions, including Russia’s ongoing involvement in conflicts in Ukraine and potential intelligence sharing with Iran during the current Middle East crisis.

The video blunder provides a rare unscripted moment from a leader whose public appearances are typically tightly controlled and carefully staged to project strength and stability to both domestic and international audiences.

That’s a good point. The lack of transparency from the Kremlin makes it very difficult to get a clear picture of Putin’s actual health status. They seem determined to maintain an image of strength and vitality at all costs.

It’s concerning to see Putin struggling with coughing fits in this unedited footage. His health seems to be an ongoing issue that the Kremlin tries to keep under wraps. I wonder if this could be related to long-term effects of COVID-19 or other underlying conditions.

This unedited footage provides a rare, unvarnished look at Putin that the Kremlin would prefer to keep hidden. Agreed. The fact that they rushed to replace the footage with an edited version is very telling. It makes you wonder what else they might be hiding about Putin’s health and physical state.

  5. While the coughing fit itself may not be a major issue, the Kremlin’s reaction to it is quite telling. Their haste to scrub the unedited footage from public view suggests they’re very sensitive about any signs of weakness or ill health from Putin. It’s a window into their priorities.

    • Absolutely. The Kremlin’s tight control over information and their obsession with image management is quite remarkable. This episode highlights how far they’ll go to preserve the facade of Putin’s strength and authority.
