Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has urged citizens to disregard what he described as “misleading and malicious” propaganda circulating about the state government’s flagship healthcare initiative, the Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna.

In a video message released Tuesday, Mann defended the program, which provides Punjab residents with cashless medical treatment coverage of up to Rs 10 lakh per family. The initiative represents a significant expansion of healthcare access in the northern Indian state, particularly targeting economically vulnerable populations.

“The Punjab government launched this ambitious scheme to ensure that every resident of Punjab, especially those from the weaker sections of society, has direct access to quality medical treatment,” Mann stated in his address.

The Chief Minister emphasized the unprecedented nature of the program, calling it a “first-of-its-kind scheme in the country.” The comprehensive coverage aims to alleviate financial pressures on families facing medical emergencies and health challenges. Healthcare costs have been a growing concern across India, with many families facing catastrophic financial burdens due to medical expenses.

According to Mann, the program has already gained significant traction among Punjab residents. “The scheme has received an overwhelming response from the people of Punjab, who are coming forward in large numbers to avail its benefits,” he noted. The initiative represents a considerable public health investment for the state government, which has struggled with healthcare infrastructure challenges in recent years.

The implementation involves an extensive network of healthcare providers. Mann clarified that the state government has successfully empanelled a majority of private hospitals under the scheme, with standardized rates established for approximately 2,600 medical procedures and treatments. This standardization aims to create transparency and predictability in healthcare costs.

Addressing concerns about the payment structure, Mann explained that “the government will pay hospitals as per the mutually agreed rates, regardless of the fact that these hospitals may charge higher amounts from private individuals.” This arrangement allows patients to access private healthcare facilities that might otherwise be financially out of reach.

However, Mann’s defense of the program comes amid apparent criticism from opposition forces. Without specifying the source or nature of the opposition, the Chief Minister claimed that “some anti-Punjab forces, who do not want the people of the state to benefit from such facilities, are deliberately spreading falsehoods about this ambitious scheme.”

The Mukh Mantri Sehat Yojna represents part of a broader trend across Indian states to expand healthcare coverage. Several states have implemented similar schemes, though Punjab’s program appears to offer particularly comprehensive coverage. These initiatives supplement the central government’s Ayushman Bharat program, which provides health insurance to economically vulnerable populations nationwide.

Healthcare remains a critical political issue in Punjab, a state with a mixed record of health outcomes. While the state performs relatively well on some health indicators compared to national averages, challenges persist in healthcare accessibility, particularly in rural areas.

The program’s implementation comes at a time when public health systems across India are still recovering from the strains of the COVID-19 pandemic, which exposed weaknesses in healthcare infrastructure nationwide and increased public awareness of healthcare needs.

Mann’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, which came to power in 2022, has made healthcare expansion a central policy priority, following a similar approach to the party’s governance model in Delhi, where improved public health services have been a flagship achievement.
