Progressive Teachers Alliance Presidential Candidate Faces Criticism Over Alleged False Propaganda

In a heated prelude to the upcoming teachers’ body elections at Punjabi University, the Progressive Teachers’ Front (PTF) has launched a strong rebuttal against what it terms “malicious and baseless propaganda” targeting its presidential candidate, Nishan Singh Deol. The controversy has intensified existing tensions between rival faculty groups on campus.

In a statement issued yesterday, PTF leaders Harvinder Singh Dhaliwal, Rajinder Chandel, and Kewal Krishan characterized the opposition’s campaign tactics as signs of desperation, claiming the Progressive Teachers Alliance (PTA) is resorting to personal attacks because they “sense imminent defeat” in the forthcoming elections.

“Over the past two years, the PTA has accomplished little beyond writing letters,” the PTF statement asserted, accusing their rivals of neglecting substantive faculty concerns while focusing on character assassination. The PTF maintains that opposition groups are deliberately attempting to divert attention from their alleged ineffectiveness in addressing pressing university issues.

The confrontation occurs against a backdrop of institutional disciplinary proceedings against Deol. University authorities have initiated action after an investigation reportedly found him guilty of helping two doctoral candidates improperly receive simultaneous scholarships and salaries from multiple institutions—a serious breach of academic protocols.

The PTF, however, has challenged the legitimacy of these proceedings, claiming they represent targeted persecution of a vocal advocate for faculty rights. According to their statement, the university administration “attempted to implicate him by reopening the same inquiry twice,” despite what they claim was an earlier investigation that failed to substantiate allegations against Deol.
