Political Firestorm Erupts Over New Spy Thriller’s Communal Portrayal

A political controversy has engulfed India following the release of the spy thriller “Dhurandhar: The Revenge,” commonly referred to as “Dhurandhar 2.” The film, directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Bollywood heavyweight Ranveer Singh, has become a flashpoint in India’s ongoing debates over religious representation in mainstream media.

Opposition figures have launched scathing criticisms of the film, accusing it of deliberately stoking anti-Muslim sentiment and functioning as political propaganda, while members of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) defend it as an accurate portrayal of national security challenges.

Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi from Maharashtra has emerged as one of the film’s most vocal critics. In statements to IANS, Azmi condemned the production as “a deliberate attempt to spread hatred and malign Muslims.” His criticism centered particularly on the film’s portrayal of slain mafia figure Atiq Ahmed, who is depicted as having direct ties to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

“This film is made only to spread hatred. It is a false film,” Azmi stated, challenging the factual basis of these alleged connections. He emphasized that while every community includes both good and bad individuals, such portrayals foster social division by unfairly linking an entire religious community to criminal activity.

The controversy has quickly drawn in political figures from across the spectrum. Congress leader Hussain Dalwai suggested investigating the film’s financial backing, insinuating it “may be financed by the RSS,” referring to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, a right-wing Hindu nationalist organization with close ties to the BJP.

Similarly, Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad accused the ruling party of using the film as a distraction tactic, claiming the BJP is attempting to divert public attention from pressing issues like unemployment. “The BJP has no work to show, so they’re creating these diversions,” Prasad alleged.

Congress MP Imran Masood dismissed the film outright as “nonsense” and criticized what he described as its glorification of the controversial 2016 demonetization policy, a signature economic initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. Masood warned that stoking communal tensions could impede national progress, emphasizing that “India’s 25 crore Muslims cannot be alienated.”

BJP leaders have mounted a vigorous defense of the film. Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao expressed disappointment with the Congress party’s opposition to the movie, accusing them of prioritizing political gain over national loyalty and ignoring public sentiment.

Adding weight to the defense, former Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police S.P. Vaid endorsed the film’s portrayal, insisting it reflects factual events depicted across both installments of the franchise. As a former security official in one of India’s most sensitive regions, Vaid’s endorsement carries particular significance in the debate over the film’s authenticity.

The controversy surrounding “Dhurandhar 2” reflects deeper societal divides in contemporary India. It highlights ongoing tensions regarding how nationalism is portrayed in popular culture, representations of religious communities in mainstream entertainment, and allegations of political agendas influencing creative content.

The film has simultaneously garnered praise for its intensity and storytelling while drawing criticism for narrative choices that touch on sensitive communal issues. This polarized reception occurs against a backdrop of already heightened religious tensions in parts of the country.

As the debate continues, “Dhurandhar 2” exemplifies how entertainment in India increasingly functions not merely as diversion but as cultural and political battleground, with audience reactions often splitting along partisan lines that mirror the country’s broader political divisions.
