Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth acknowledged on Friday that the Trump administration anticipates a shift in CNN’s coverage once Trump ally David Ellison’s company completes its takeover of Warner Discovery, CNN’s parent company.

The admission came during Hegseth’s criticism of CNN’s recent reporting on the Iran war, particularly regarding the conflict’s impact on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

“More fake news from CNN: ‘Reports that the Trump administration underestimated the Iran war’s impact on the Strait of Hormuz.’ Patently ridiculous, of course,” Hegseth said. “For decades, Iran has threatened shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. This is always what they do: hold the Strait hostage. CNN doesn’t think we thought of that. It’s a fundamentally unserious report. The sooner David Ellison takes over that network, the better.”

This statement represents a rare public acknowledgment of the administration’s expectations for editorial changes at major news outlets acquired by Trump allies. Hegseth and President Trump have consistently labeled accurate but unfavorable reporting as “fake news,” with Hegseth specifically objecting to coverage of U.S. military casualties and reports of potential U.S. responsibility in an Iranian school bombing that killed at least 168 children.

Media industry analysts view the comments as particularly significant given the recent wave of consolidation in news media ownership. Ellison, CEO of Skydance Media and a known Republican donor, is poised to take control of Warner Discovery after his company outbid Netflix in a deal reportedly facilitated by President Trump behind the scenes.

Despite Ellison’s claims of impartiality during a recent CNBC interview, where he stated his company is in the “truth business,” there are growing concerns about political influence over editorial decisions. These concerns have been amplified by the precedent set at CBS News, which Ellison’s company acquired earlier.

Following that acquisition, conservative commentator Bari Weiss was appointed Editor-in-Chief of CBS News. Under her leadership, the network has been criticized for sidelining reporting critical of the Trump administration while programs such as “CBS Evening News” have featured favorable coverage of administration officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Questions about Ellison’s political neutrality were further raised when he accompanied Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Trump’s closest congressional allies, to the State of the Union address. Graham has consistently supported the administration’s most controversial policies throughout both Trump presidencies.

Media watchdog organizations have expressed concern about the growing consolidation of media ownership under figures aligned with the administration. The Columbia Journalism Review recently published an analysis detailing how such ownership patterns can lead to subtle shifts in coverage priorities and editorial emphasis, even without direct interference in day-to-day reporting.

The implications extend beyond CNN to the broader media landscape, where independent journalism faces mounting pressures. Several press freedom organizations have documented what they describe as an unprecedented campaign against traditional media institutions, with President Trump having declared what critics call a “war on the First Amendment” through both rhetoric and policy actions.

Market analysts note that these developments come at a critical juncture for cable news networks, which are already struggling with declining viewership and advertising revenue in the digital era. The potential reshaping of CNN’s editorial approach could significantly impact the competitive landscape in political news coverage during a politically divisive time.

Hegseth’s candid admission provides rare confirmation of what media critics have long suspected: that the administration views friendly ownership of major news outlets as strategic in shaping public perception of its policies and performance.
