India Accused of Orchestrating Misinformation Campaign Against Pakistan

Federal Minister for Information Atta Tarar has accused India of launching a systematic misinformation campaign against Pakistan following the recent arrest of a Pakistani fisherman allegedly coerced into working for Indian intelligence.

During a press conference in Islamabad, Tarar, accompanied by Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudhary, detailed how the fisherman, identified as Ijaz Mallah from Thatta district in Sindh, was apprehended by Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies while attempting to fulfill tasks allegedly assigned by Indian intelligence operatives.

“India has not forgotten its defeat on the battlefield and after the failure of Operation Sindoor, it has started a malicious campaign of misinformation and disinformation, while the pliant Indian media is busy spreading false narratives,” Tarar stated.

According to the minister, Mallah was initially arrested by the Indian coast guard in September while fishing in international waters. He was then allegedly taken to an undisclosed location where Indian intelligence officials coerced him into carrying out espionage activities under threat of prolonged imprisonment.

“He was told that he would be compensated and if he did not comply, he would have to stay imprisoned for two to three years,” Tarar explained, adding that the fisherman eventually agreed to the demands due to fear and the promise of financial rewards.

The minister displayed images of items allegedly recovered from Mallah, which included uniforms of the Pakistan Navy, Army, and Sindh Rangers with specific name tags and measurements. The fisherman was also instructed to procure Pakistani currency, cigarettes, match boxes, lighters, and Zong SIM cards.

“This was part of a bigger plan of the Indian intelligence agency to launch a propaganda warfare against Pakistan,” Tarar asserted, suggesting these items would be used in staged operations to discredit Pakistan internationally.

Pakistani intelligence agencies had placed Mallah under surveillance after detecting his suspicious activities. He was ultimately intercepted at sea while attempting to return to India with the procured items.

The information minister presented a video confession from Mallah during the press conference. In the recording, the fisherman confirmed his detention by Indian coast guards in August and subsequent recruitment by an unnamed Indian intelligence official who offered him freedom and rewards in exchange for cooperation.

“After catching me, they took me to a jail in an undisclosed location, where I was interrogated by an Indian secret agency’s official,” Mallah stated in the video. “He told me that if I worked for them, then they could let me go.”

This incident occurs against the backdrop of historically tense relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors. The allegations represent the latest chapter in a long-standing pattern of espionage accusations and counter-accusations between Pakistan and India.

Security analysts note that both countries have frequently accused each other of using proxy agents and disinformation campaigns to advance their regional interests. The maritime boundary between Pakistan and India has been particularly vulnerable to such activities due to the high volume of fishing vessels operating in contested waters.

The Pakistani government claims this case demonstrates India’s determination to undermine Pakistan’s international standing through elaborate misinformation operations. According to Tarar, detailed investigations into the matter are ongoing.

“This is part of a greater plan by India to malign Pakistan and to use such propaganda items and disinformation,” the minister concluded. “We have been very active countering the misinformation by the Indian media and Indian state.”

Neither the Indian government nor its intelligence agencies have responded to these allegations at the time of reporting.
