Indian Authorities Debunk AI-Generated Video Targeting Military Leadership

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) Fact Check unit has identified and debunked a digitally manipulated video circulating on social media that falsely attributes inflammatory statements to Lieutenant General Manjinder Singh, Commander of the South Western Army.

The fabricated video, which originated from Pakistani propaganda accounts, portrays Lt Gen Singh criticizing the Indian Army’s military exercises as mere “political optics to boost the image for the Bihar elections.” According to the PIB, this video is entirely AI-generated and represents a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation about the Indian Armed Forces.

In the falsified footage, Lt Gen Singh appears to make politically charged statements, including: “We all know these so-called threshold exercises are being pushed for optics to boost the image for Bihar elections, but remember we serve India, not any party. Our duty is to defend the nation, not to become props in political theatre. They may try to saffronise our image, but the Indian Army belongs only to the Republic, not to Modi.”

The PIB Fact Check unit has categorically stated that Lt Gen Singh never made such remarks, confirming the video as a sophisticated digital forgery designed to create discord between military leadership and civilian government.

The original video, recorded in Bikaner, Rajasthan, shows Lt Gen Singh discussing legitimate military matters, including the Indian Army’s preparedness and training initiatives. In his actual comments, the commander emphasized the importance of night training and technological advancements in meeting modern defense challenges.

“The Indian Army is following the political direction of the ‘New Normal’, under which any terror act on the country will be considered an ‘act of war’,” Lt Gen Singh actually stated. “The military has to prepare for any such activities. A lot of technologies and capabilities have been introduced for this. Our focus is on maximum night training; hence, we are carrying out 70% of the training at night and 30% during the day.”

This incident highlights the growing concern over AI-generated deepfakes in India’s information landscape, particularly as the Bihar state elections approach. Security analysts suggest that such sophisticated misinformation campaigns are becoming increasingly common, aimed at driving wedges between different institutions of the Indian state.

The timing of the fake video’s circulation is particularly sensitive, coming during a period of heightened regional tensions and as India continues to modernize its armed forces. Military experts note that the Indian Army’s night training focus mentioned by Lt Gen Singh reflects genuine strategic priorities in contemporary warfare preparedness.

The PIB has warned social media users to exercise caution and verify information from official sources before sharing content that could potentially undermine public trust in national institutions. The bureau has also highlighted this case as part of a broader pattern of foreign-originated disinformation targeting India’s security establishment.

Digital forensic specialists have pointed out that this incident demonstrates the evolving sophistication of AI-generated deepfakes, which can now mimic speech patterns and visual elements with increasing realism. This poses new challenges for fact-checkers and information security professionals working to maintain the integrity of public discourse.

Indian cybersecurity agencies are reportedly investigating the source of the manipulated video to determine the full extent of the disinformation network behind its creation and distribution.
