Bangladesh’s fact-checking organization BanglaFact has identified “BD Digest” as a propaganda platform operating under the guise of a legitimate news outlet, according to a report released Saturday. The organization, which presents itself as a news site, has been exposed as a vehicle for spreading misinformation in favor of the banned Awami League party.

The Press Institute Bangladesh’s fact-check team conducted an extensive investigation that revealed BD Digest is run by Canada-based Awami League activist Kazi Mamun. Despite its professional appearance and structure that mimics traditional news websites, the platform primarily serves as a political propaganda tool rather than a journalistic endeavor.

“Although it presents itself as a news site, BD Digest is essentially a political propaganda platform of the Awami League,” BanglaFact stated in its report. “Its main purpose is to conduct organized political campaigns in favor of the Awami League.”

The investigation highlighted how the website employs sophisticated design elements and a comprehensive content structure, including sections on politics, economy, entertainment, and sports, to create the impression of legitimacy. This professional presentation has successfully misled many readers into perceiving it as a credible news source, leading them to share its content across social media platforms.

BanglaFact noted that prominent Awami League figures, including Sajeeb Wazed Joy, have regularly shared content from BD Digest, further amplifying its reach and perceived credibility among supporters.

The revelation comes amid a growing concern about the proliferation of misinformation in Bangladesh, particularly following the July 2024 mass uprising that led to the fall of the Awami League government. Since then, fact-checking organizations have observed a significant increase in rumors and false information targeting the interim government and groups associated with the uprising.

“Since its fall following the July 2024 mass uprising, the Awami League has chosen propaganda and misinformation as its primary tools,” BanglaFact reported. “As part of this, numerous Facebook pages and websites are being operated. BD Digest is another such propaganda machine of the same nature.”

The spread of misinformation extends beyond Bangladesh’s borders, with fact-checkers identifying Indian media outlets and social media platforms as sources of rumors targeting Bangladesh’s interim government. This cross-border dimension adds complexity to the challenge of combating false information in the region.

BanglaFact has been at the forefront of countering this trend, identifying hundreds of pieces of false information circulating online in recent months. The organization continues to work toward ensuring accurate information reaches the Bangladeshi public during a politically sensitive transition period.

Media literacy experts note that propaganda sites masquerading as legitimate news sources represent a growing global challenge. These platforms exploit the visual language and structure of journalism while abandoning core journalistic principles such as accuracy, fairness, and transparency.

The identification of BD Digest as a propaganda platform underscores the importance of fact-checking organizations in the current media landscape, particularly in regions experiencing political transitions where information integrity is crucial for democratic processes and social stability.

As Bangladesh continues to navigate its post-uprising political landscape, the ability of citizens to distinguish between legitimate news sources and partisan propaganda platforms remains essential for informed civic participation.
