Elon Musk has officially launched Grokipedia, a new crowdsourced online encyclopedia positioned as a competitor to Wikipedia. The billionaire entrepreneur announced the launch on social media, declaring that Grokipedia.com is “now live” with a mission focused on delivering “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”

This launch follows months of Musk’s public criticism of Wikipedia, which he has repeatedly characterized as filled with “propaganda.” Musk has previously urged people to stop donating to the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that operates Wikipedia. He first revealed plans for Grokipedia in September, noting that his artificial intelligence company xAI was developing the platform.

The newly launched Grokipedia features a minimalist design centered around a simple search bar where users can enter queries. The site currently claims to host 885,279 articles, significantly fewer than Wikipedia’s more than 7 million English-language articles. Users can search for content on various topics ranging from celebrities like Taylor Swift to historical landmarks such as Buckingham Palace or current events like the baseball World Series.

While Wikipedia’s content is created and maintained by a global community of volunteer editors, Grokipedia’s content creation process remains somewhat opaque. Industry analysts suggest the platform likely utilizes the same xAI model that powers Musk’s Grok chatbot. However, early examinations indicate some articles appear to be adapted from Wikipedia itself, raising questions about originality and sourcing.

The San Francisco-based Wikimedia Foundation responded cautiously to the launch, stating on Tuesday that it is “still in the process of understanding how Grokipedia works.” The foundation noted the irony in Grokipedia’s existence, pointing out that “This human-created knowledge is what AI companies rely on to generate content; even Grokipedia needs Wikipedia to exist.”

Wikipedia has served as a crucial training resource for numerous AI systems, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, due to its vast collection of structured information with relatively liberal terms of use. This makes Musk’s new venture particularly interesting as it appears to both criticize and potentially rely on Wikipedia’s foundation.

The launch comes amid increasing scrutiny of Wikipedia from conservative circles. In August, Republican lawmakers in the U.S. Congress initiated an investigation into alleged “manipulation efforts” in Wikipedia’s editing process, claiming potential bias that could undermine neutrality both on the platform itself and the AI systems trained using its data.

A comparison of content between the two platforms reveals notable differences in sourcing standards. Wikipedia enforces strict citation requirements, with volunteer editors expected to provide verifiable sources for nearly every claim. Sentences lacking proper verification can be challenged and removed. By contrast, some early Grokipedia entries appear to have significantly fewer sources. For example, an article on the Chola Dynasty of southern India cites only three sources, while Wikipedia’s corresponding entry features 113 linked sources plus numerous referenced books.

Grokipedia’s own entry about Wikipedia makes explicit ideological claims, accusing the established encyclopedia of having “systemic ideological biases — particularly a left-leaning slant in coverage of political figures and topics.”

Responding to the launch and these criticisms, the Wikimedia Foundation defended its platform: “Unlike newer projects, Wikipedia’s strengths are clear: it has transparent policies, rigorous volunteer oversight, and a strong culture of continuous improvement. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, written to inform billions of readers without promoting a particular point of view.”

The emergence of Grokipedia represents another front in Musk’s expanding tech portfolio and his increasing focus on information control and distribution. How the platform will evolve, ensure accuracy, and differentiate itself in the crowdsourced knowledge space remains to be seen.
