Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin launched a fierce criticism of the BJP-led central government on Saturday, accusing it of arrogance in its approach to language policy and governance in opposition-ruled states.

In a pointed message on social media platform X, Stalin raised several questions about the BJP’s practices, particularly challenging what he described as the party’s tendency to name major national projects and legislation exclusively in Hindi and Sanskrit. This criticism aligns with the DMK’s long-standing opposition to what it perceives as Hindi imposition in Tamil Nadu, where language politics has historically been a sensitive issue.

“What kind of arrogance is it to name the country’s major projects and laws solely in Hindi and Sanskrit?” Stalin asked, echoing concerns shared by many in Tamil Nadu who view such practices as undermining regional languages and cultural identity.

The Chief Minister also took aim at what he called the BJP’s “washing machine” politics, questioning how “corrupt individuals get cleansed” upon joining the ruling party. This metaphor has been frequently used by opposition leaders to allege that corruption investigations against politicians mysteriously disappear once they align with the BJP.

Stalin extended his critique to the role of governors in opposition-ruled states, implying interference in state governance. “In states governed by opposition parties, what do you hope to achieve by causing chaos through Governors?” he asked, reflecting ongoing tensions between several state governments and their governors, who are appointed by the central government.

The Tamil Nadu leader also raised concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise conducted in Bihar, suggesting it facilitated “vote theft” to benefit the BJP in elections. This allegation comes amid broader opposition concerns about electoral processes and voter list revisions in various states.

Cultural heritage was another point of contention, with Stalin accusing the central government of attempting to downplay the significance of archaeological discoveries at Keeladi. These excavations have revealed evidence of an ancient Tamil civilization, which Stalin suggested the Centre was trying to suppress or minimize.

“Will there be answers to all these? Or, as usual, will you start spreading false propaganda through WhatsApp University?” Stalin concluded, using the popular term that mockingly refers to unverified information circulated through messaging platforms.

The Chief Minister’s remarks follow statements from Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, who recently accused the Union Government of withholding funds from the state as “political vendetta.” According to Thennarasu, Tamil Nadu received only Rs 450 crore of the Rs 4,000 crore it was entitled to for Right to Education programs.

Thennarasu further claimed that the state’s Jal Jeevan Mission projects were suffering due to pending funds of Rs 3,407 crore from the central government. He has pledged to continue protests until Tamil Nadu receives its due share of resources.

This exchange highlights the growing political tensions between the DMK-ruled Tamil Nadu and the BJP-led central government ahead of future electoral contests. The dispute also underscores ongoing debates about federalism, resource allocation, and cultural recognition in India’s diverse political landscape.

As the ruling party in Tamil Nadu since 2021, the DMK has consistently positioned itself as a defender of Tamil language, culture, and regional autonomy against what it characterizes as centralized control from New Delhi.

Absolutely, any appearance of political interference in corruption investigations needs to be addressed rigorously and objectively.

  2. This is a nuanced topic with reasonable arguments on multiple sides. I hope the government and opposition can find a constructive path forward that balances national unity with respect for regional identities and language rights.

This is a complex political issue with valid concerns on both sides. It’s important to balance national unity with respect for regional languages and identities. Hopefully the parties can find a constructive compromise.

  4. Naming major projects and laws solely in Hindi and Sanskrit does seem problematic if it marginalizes other official languages. Promoting national unity is important, but shouldn’t come at the cost of linguistic diversity.

Accusations of vote theft and propaganda are serious. I hope the relevant authorities thoroughly investigate any alleged irregularities and provide transparent answers to address the Chief Minister’s concerns.
