Russian schoolteacher Pavel Yevseyev never intended to become an anti-propaganda crusader. But when faced with the growing militarization of Russia’s education system following the invasion of Ukraine, the 45-year-old history teacher felt compelled to act.
“I couldn’t just stand by and watch as children were being indoctrinated,” Yevseyev told reporters via encrypted messaging from his current location in Armenia, where he fled after being forced from his teaching position in Moscow.
Yevseyev’s resistance began in early 2022 when the Russian education ministry introduced new “patriotic education” guidelines. These mandated weekly sessions called “Important Conversations” that promoted state narratives about the Ukraine conflict and Russian military actions.
The veteran teacher, who had spent 20 years in Moscow’s public school system, initially tried subtle resistance. He would contextualize the mandatory materials, encouraging students to question sources and consider multiple perspectives – fundamental principles of historical analysis that had long been part of his teaching philosophy.
“I never told students what to think. I just wanted them to learn how to think critically,” Yevseyev explained.
His approach did not go unnoticed. In October 2022, school administrators issued a formal warning after parents reported that Yevseyev had questioned statements in a textbook glorifying Russia’s annexation of Crimea. By December, he was placed under increased scrutiny with administrators regularly observing his classes.
The pressure intensified in February 2023 when Yevseyev refused to show students a government-produced video celebrating the Russian military. Within days, he was summoned to the principal’s office and presented with a choice: resign voluntarily or face dismissal and potential criminal charges under Russia’s new “discrediting the armed forces” law.
Education experts note that Yevseyev’s experience reflects a broader campaign to militarize Russia’s education system. Since February 2022, schools across Russia have introduced military training, increased presence of military recruiters, and mandatory lessons promoting state narratives about the Ukraine conflict.
“The Russian state is weaponizing education,” said Katerina Mertsalova, an education policy analyst with the independent Russian think tank Kompleks. “Teachers are now expected to be propagandists first, educators second.”
According to data from the Russian teachers’ union, over 700 educators have been dismissed since March 2022 for expressing views deemed insufficiently patriotic or questioning official narratives. Many more have quietly resigned rather than comply with new requirements.
After leaving Russia, Yevseyev connected with other exiled teachers through the organization “Free Russian Educators,” which supports teachers who have fled repression. The group provides legal assistance and helps educators find positions in countries that have accepted Russian refugees.
“We call Pavel ‘Mr. Nobody’ because he represents thousands of ordinary teachers caught in this impossible situation,” said Mikhail Sokolov, co-founder of the organization. “He wasn’t an activist or opposition figure – just a teacher trying to maintain educational integrity.”
The Russian education ministry has defended its policies as necessary to instill “traditional values” and “patriotic consciousness” in young Russians. Officials have repeatedly stated that teachers must support state policies or find other employment.
International education organizations have expressed concern about the situation. UNESCO released a statement in March calling for “protection of educational independence” and noting that politicization of classrooms violates international standards for quality education.
For Yevseyev, the future remains uncertain. Currently teaching online courses for Russian-speaking students abroad, he hopes to eventually return to a classroom setting.
“I miss my students terribly,” he said. “But I couldn’t teach lies. Education should liberate minds, not constrain them.”
As Russia’s conflict in Ukraine continues with no end in sight, the transformation of the country’s education system represents one of the less visible but potentially long-lasting consequences of the war – one that educators like Yevseyev fear may shape a generation’s worldview.
“When you control what young people learn, you control the future,” Yevseyev reflected. “That’s why the classroom became another battlefield in this war.”
