Pro-Russian Disinformation Network Targets European Leaders with Sophisticated Tactics
A sprawling pro-Russian disinformation operation is actively spreading false narratives across Europe through an elaborate network of fake news sites and manipulated media, according to a comprehensive investigation by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and its partners.
The investigation revealed that a website operated by a German far-right politician serves as a central hub for disseminating pro-Kremlin propaganda throughout the continent. The operation employs sophisticated methods including misleading stories under fake bylines, cloned legitimate news sites, and viral videos designed to erode trust in European democratic institutions.
One particularly concerning example involved a fabricated story falsely connecting French President Emmanuel Macron to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The false allegations appeared on a counterfeit version of the French news outlet France-Soir, engineered to look authentic, and quickly gained traction across social media platforms.
“These campaigns are deliberately designed to fracture public trust and distort democratic debate,” said Elena Loginova, an OCCRP researcher involved in the investigation. “The level of coordination and technical sophistication has increased dramatically in recent years.”
The joint investigation brought together journalists from multiple organizations including Paper Trail Media, Ukrainian Toronto Television, Investigace.cz, Bird.bg, and Tamedia, highlighting the cross-border nature of modern disinformation threats.
Meanwhile, a separate investigation by EUobserver has uncovered a previously undisclosed European Commission network actively coordinating increased deportation efforts across the EU. This little-known group brings together member states, the EU border agency Frontex, and various other agencies to share migrant data and develop strategies to accelerate removals.
The network has reportedly been pushing for what it terms “voluntary returns” to countries like Syria, despite ongoing instability and security concerns in such regions. Human rights advocates have expressed alarm at the lack of transparency surrounding the group’s activities and the potential risks to vulnerable migrants.
In the defense sector, a major corruption scandal at NATO’s procurement agency continues to widen, now ensnaring one of Europe’s leading defense companies. According to reporting by Follow the Money, Czechoslovak Group (CSG) failed to disclose that one of its subsidiaries, Spanish ammunition manufacturer Fábrica de Municiones de Granada (FMG), had been banned from submitting NATO contract tenders amid corruption allegations.
The scandal, which reportedly involved millions in bribes funneled through intermediaries to secure defense contracts, raises serious questions about oversight and transparency in European defense procurement. CSG has maintained its subsidiary “believes it has done nothing wrong,” though investigators continue to probe the extent of the alleged corruption.
Environmental concerns are also making headlines, with Danwatch reporting that approximately half of collected textile waste in Denmark still ends up incinerated or downcycled rather than properly recycled. This comes as Danish cities ramp up textile collection ahead of new EU recycling requirements.
The fashion industry accounts for up to 8% of global carbon emissions, with Europeans purchasing an average of 19kg of textiles annually. Despite increased collection efforts, many garments are ultimately deemed too low quality for effective recycling, highlighting the persistent challenges in building truly circular fashion systems.
In a separate environmental scandal, Voxeurop has documented the plight of thousands of livestock that have perished in European floods without being officially recorded. Despite the EU’s stated commitment to animal welfare, the investigation uncovered a significant policy gap that excludes farm animals from disaster legislation, leaving farmers to bear substantial losses without adequate support.
The ongoing Middle East conflict has also raised questions about European logistical support, with The Ditch reporting that a cargo ship carrying ammunition for the Israeli Defence Forces was permitted to transit through Spanish waters. This passage occurred despite Spain’s ban on the United States using its military bases for operations against Iran, highlighting potential inconsistencies in Spain’s stance on military assistance in the region.
The vessel, reportedly insured by an Irish firm, allegedly attempted to conceal its ultimate destination of Haifa by listing a Cypriot port instead. Investigators note this route has facilitated multiple large weapons shipments since October 2023.
