Russian Disinformation Campaign Targets European Leaders with Fake News Sites

A sophisticated pro-Russian disinformation network operating across Europe has been exposed by a multinational team of investigators. The operation, reportedly run by a German far-right politician, has been systematically spreading Kremlin-friendly narratives using an elaborate web of fake news sites, fabricated journalist identities, and manipulated viral content.

The joint investigation, published by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP) and partner organizations, revealed how the network recently targeted French President Emmanuel Macron with false claims linking him to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. These fabricated stories appeared on a counterfeit version of the French news outlet France-Soir, designed to mimic the appearance of legitimate journalism.

“This represents a coordinated effort to undermine trust in democratic institutions across the continent,” said Elena Loginova from OCCRP, one of the lead investigators. “The sophistication of these operations demonstrates how disinformation campaigns can rapidly spread across multiple platforms and national borders.”

The investigation comes amid growing concerns about foreign interference in European politics. Intelligence agencies across the EU have warned about intensifying Russian information warfare tactics ahead of several national elections scheduled this year.

Meanwhile, a parallel investigation has uncovered that a secretive network within the European Commission is orchestrating a significant increase in migrant deportations across the EU. The group, exposed by EUobserver, brings together member states, Frontex (the EU border agency), and other institutional players to enhance coordination on removals, including what they term “voluntary returns” to countries like Syria despite ongoing conflict and instability.

Human rights organizations have expressed alarm at these findings, noting that EU migration policy appears to be increasingly focused on enforcement rather than protection. “This represents a troubling shift in priorities away from humanitarian obligations toward a more enforcement-driven approach,” said a spokesperson for the European Council on Refugees and Exiles.

In the defense sector, one of Europe’s largest military contractors has become entangled in a widening NATO corruption scandal. Czechoslovak Group (CSG), a major European defense conglomerate, failed to disclose that its Spanish ammunition manufacturing subsidiary Fábrica de Municiones de Granada (FMG) had been suspended from NATO contracts amid a bribery investigation.

The corruption probe, according to reporting by Follow the Money and partner outlets, involves allegations that millions in bribes were channeled through intermediaries to secure lucrative defense contracts. CSG maintains that its subsidiary “believes it has done nothing wrong,” though the scandal has raised questions about transparency and oversight in Europe’s growing defense industry.

Environmental concerns have also made headlines with an investigation revealing the disappointing reality of textile recycling in Denmark. Despite ambitious EU-mandated collection efforts ahead of new recycling regulations, Danwatch found that approximately half of all collected textile waste still ends up incinerated or “downcycled” into low-value products like insulation.

The fashion industry accounts for up to 8% of global carbon emissions, with Europeans purchasing an average of 19 kilograms of textiles annually. The investigation highlights the significant gap between recycling rhetoric and reality, particularly as many fast fashion garments prove unsuitable for high-quality recycling processes.

In maritime news, The Ditch reported that a cargo vessel carrying tons of ammunition for the Israeli Defense Forces was permitted to pass through Spanish waters, despite Spain’s public stance restricting military support for certain operations in the Middle East. The ship reportedly attempted to conceal its final destination of Haifa by listing a Cypriot port in its documentation.

A separate Voxeurop investigation highlighted the overlooked impact of European flooding on livestock, with thousands of farm animals perishing in recent floods without being officially recorded or addressed in disaster response planning. Despite the EU’s stated commitment to animal welfare, the report identified a critical policy gap that leaves livestock largely unprotected during increasingly frequent extreme weather events.

These investigations collectively paint a picture of complex challenges facing European governance, security, and sustainability efforts, highlighting gaps between stated policies and implementation across multiple sectors.
