Mississippi authorities are investigating the disturbing discovery of Ku Klux Klan propaganda found inside a state government building, raising serious questions about extremist influence within public institutions.

The materials, which included membership applications for the white supremacist group, were discovered in an employee’s desk at a regional office of the Mississippi Department of Revenue in Greenwood. Officials confirmed the discovery following a targeted search of the facility after receiving a tip from a concerned citizen.

Governor Tate Reeves expressed deep concern over the incident, ordering an immediate internal investigation. “There is absolutely no place for hateful, divisive material in Mississippi government,” Reeves stated at a press conference Tuesday. “We take this matter with the utmost seriousness and will ensure a thorough investigation determines how these materials ended up in a state office.”

The Department of Revenue, which oversees tax collection and enforcement throughout Mississippi, has placed the employee in question on administrative leave pending the investigation’s completion. Department Commissioner Mark Williams emphasized that the agency maintains strict policies against discriminatory behavior and materials in the workplace.

“We are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all Mississippians,” Williams said. “This incident does not reflect our values as an organization or as public servants.”

Law enforcement officials are also examining whether the possession of such materials in a government building constitutes a violation of state laws regarding harassment or intimidation in the workplace. The FBI has been notified, as the incident potentially raises concerns about civil rights violations.

The discovery comes amid a documented nationwide increase in hate group activity. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks extremist organizations, Mississippi has seen a 23% rise in white nationalist group membership over the past three years. The state has a particularly painful history with the KKK, which was responsible for numerous lynchings, bombings, and other violent acts during the Civil Rights era.

Community leaders in Greenwood, a city with a population that is approximately 73% Black, expressed outrage over the incident. Local NAACP chapter president Reverend James Collins called for transparency in the investigation.

“This is not just about one employee or one desk drawer,” Collins said. “We need to understand if this represents a broader problem within our government institutions. The citizens of Mississippi deserve to know that they will be treated equally when interacting with state agencies.”

State Senator Robert Thompson, who represents the district containing Greenwood, emphasized the need for accountability. “The presence of materials promoting a terrorist organization in a government office undermines public trust in fundamental ways,” Thompson said. “We need clear answers and decisive action.”

The Department of Revenue has announced plans to conduct sensitivity training for all employees statewide in response to the incident. Officials also stated they would review hiring practices and workplace policies to prevent similar situations.

Political analysts note that the incident highlights ongoing tensions in a state still grappling with its complex racial history. Dr. Melissa Harris-Johnson, professor of political science at the University of Mississippi, points out that the discovery reflects broader challenges.

“Mississippi has made significant progress in many areas, but incidents like this demonstrate the persistence of racial animus in some corners of society, including potentially within government institutions,” Harris-Johnson explained. “How state leadership responds to this incident will be closely watched by communities across Mississippi.”

Public reaction to the news has been swift, with civil rights organizations calling for a wider audit of state offices to ensure no similar materials exist elsewhere in Mississippi’s government infrastructure.

The investigation is expected to continue for several weeks as authorities determine whether this was an isolated incident or potentially part of a wider pattern. State officials have promised to make the findings public once the investigation concludes.
