Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman’s recent comments about the Hindi film industry and the Vicky Kaushal-starrer “Chhaava” have ignited a significant controversy in Bollywood, drawing sharp criticism from several industry figures, including actress and Member of Parliament Kangana Ranaut.

In an interview with BBC, Rahman described “Chhaava,” a historical film based on Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, as “divisive” while explaining his reduced presence in Bollywood productions over the past eight years. The composer, who created the music for the film, said he had even questioned director Laxman Utekar about his selection for the project.

“It is a divisive film. I think it cashed in on divisiveness, but I think the core of it is to show bravery,” Rahman stated in the interview. He added, “I asked him, ‘Why do you need me for this film?’ and he said, ‘We need only you for this.'”

The acclaimed composer also suggested that audiences are discerning enough to recognize potential manipulation in films. “It is an enjoyable film, but definitely people are smarter than that. Do you think people are going to get influenced by movies? They have something called an internal conscience, which knows what the truth is and what manipulation is.”

Kangana Ranaut, known for her outspoken views and recent political alignment, responded forcefully to Rahman’s interview on social media. Sharing a screenshot of his comments, Ranaut wrote, “Dear @arrahman ji, I face so much prejudice and partiality in the film industry because I support a saffron party yet I must say I have not come across a man more prejudiced and hateful than you.”

The “Queen” actress further alleged that Rahman had refused to even meet with her regarding her directorial project “Emergency,” a political drama centered around former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s controversial period of emergency rule.

“I desperately wanted to narrate my directorial Emergency to you. Forget narration, you even refused to meet me. I was told you don’t want to be part of a propaganda film,” Ranaut claimed. She added that despite Rahman’s alleged characterization, “Emergency was called a masterpiece by all critics. Even opposition party leaders sent me fan letters appreciating the film for its balanced and compassionate approach but you are blinded by your hate.”

This exchange highlights growing tensions within the Indian film industry, which has become increasingly polarized along political lines in recent years. Rahman’s comments come at a time when Bollywood is navigating complex relationships with audiences across India’s diverse political spectrum.

The controversy surrounding “Chhaava” reflects broader debates about historical representation in Indian cinema and the responsibilities of filmmakers when depicting culturally significant figures. Historical dramas have become particularly contentious in India’s current sociopolitical climate, with different groups often challenging narratives they perceive as biased or politically motivated.

Rahman, who has composed music for over 100 films across multiple languages and won two Academy Awards for “Slumdog Millionaire,” has traditionally maintained a relatively neutral public stance on political matters. His recent comments mark a departure from this approach, potentially signaling shifting dynamics within the industry.

The public spat between two of India’s most recognized entertainment figures has drawn significant attention on social media, with fans and industry insiders taking sides in what appears to be an increasingly fractured entertainment landscape.
